Definition of Nursing

Since the beginning of the profession, people have struggled to define nursing (Chitty & Black, 2011). This is due to the fact that nursing is a broad and ever-changing occupation. However, it is important that the profession work past these challenges in order to generate a true meaning of the word “nurse.” Agreeing on a definition of nursing helps to create a common goal for all those involved in the profession. The purpose of this paper will be to define nursing and the terms that surround it. These terms include patient, health, and environment. The paper will also examine the personal and professional values that are crucial for a nurse to possess. Finally, the paper will address the role of the Regis Mission in contributing to the professional values of a nursing graduate.
Definition of Terms
• Nursing is defined by the The International Council of Nurses (ICN) as, “autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well, and in all settings,” (International Council of Nurses, 2010). Due to the broadness of this definition, nurses must be able to adapt to varying patients and environmental factors.
• Patient is defined as someone seeking medical care (Patient, n.d.). Nurses work in collaboration with patients to help direct them towards a highest state of well-being.
• Health or one’s physical and mental condition, is ever-changing and dependent upon a variety of factors. Therefore, the nurse must realize that guiding patients towards health is a continuous process (Chitty & Black, 2011).
• Environment or the setting, which shapes the patient, is made of many internal and external factors. These factors include and are not limited to socioeconomic status and psychological state (Chitty & Black, 2011). The nurse must keep in mind the environmental factors
