EXPRESSIONISTIC TECNIQUES IN THE NOVEL Arthur Millerwas born on October 17, 1915, in New York City, the son of Isidore and Augusta Miller. His father lost his wealth during the Great Depression of the 1920s and the family, like many others, suffered economic hardship and could not afford to send him to college. Miller worked for two years in an automobile parts warehouse, earning enough money to attend the University of Michigan in 1934, where he studied history and economics. He graduated in 1938.Arthur MillerBenefitting from the U.S. Government's Federal Theatre Project, began learning about the craft of the theatre, working with such skilled writers and directors as Clifford Odets(Waiting for Lefty) and Elia Kazan (the famous film and theatre director who later produced Miller's best-known work, Death of a Salesman). His first Broadway production, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened in 1944 and ran for only four performances.
McCarthyism, a campaign against alleged communists in the US government and other institutions carried out under Senator Joseph McCarthy, scared many Americans during the 1950s to speak for themselves, therefore they feared of standing out as a communist. As a result of McCarthyism, America in the 1950s were overwhelmed by a suppressing conformity. America's democratic institutions and basic civil and political rights were violated. McCarthyism led to conformity because no one wanted to be accused of being a communist. Poverty rates for African Americans were in general twice those of their white counterparts.
He charged that there were 205 communist spies in the state department who were selling out the United States. McCarthy warned that there were communist traitors in American government and society that were threatening to destroy the United States. He declared: "When a great democracy is destroyed, it will not be because of enemies from without, but rather because of enemies from within." McCarthy called for a "moral uprising" of Americans to drive these dangerous communists out of government and society. He also declared that the United States had lost ground in the world not as a result of foreign aggression, but “because of the traitorous actions of those who have been treated so well by this nation.” The corporate-controlled news media also shared the blame for McCarthy's ability to disseminate "great lies."
The 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck took place during the beginning of the Cold War, specifically around the time when Senator Joseph McCarthy was rising to power. During his reign as the chairman for the Committee on Government Operations of the Senate, he accused several public figures of being Communists. His speeches were frequently reported on in the media, and the determined factor for censorship during the Red Scare was based on ideology, rather than actual content. Many people unjustly accused of being Communists were persecuted and discriminated, and the Republican Party began advocating the rise of ideological conformity. A great deal of the American public became extremely paranoid, and the general atmosphere of the era was nihilistic due to fear of Communist infiltration.
All three of these organizations have “valid” reasons for wanted the president dead. The CIA, for one, was frustrated with JFK and possibly took it upon themselves to take care of the problem. * * The CIA was a very secretive organization in the 1960s and very little was known about their operations. However, during that time period, the CIA was widely believed to have carried out many high-profile political assassinations. Seven percent of conspiracy-loving Americans blame the Central Intelligence Agency for Kennedy's death.
One key piece of evidence in favour of this is the Pravda article “dizzy with success†which suggests that the purges spiralled out of Stalin’s control. The Purges thrust the whole of Russia into a state of fear of what would happen to them. It affected all sectors of society and even a seemingly insignificant act could result in arrest. For example one woman was arrested for saying that Tukhachevsky, a high ranking military officer, was handsome after he was arrested. One key reason other than Stalin’s personal paranoia for the Purges was to cleanse the party of careerists, yet dissidents and doubters were also at risk.
The significance of this scene is the fact that now there are no lies and his children and wife can see for themselves, how weighed down he really was by the American Dream. The American dream offered people a chance to achieve riches even if they had started penniless. Becoming wealthy in all aspects required characteristics of charisma, masculinity and competitiveness, having these meant you were on the right road to success. This could be an indication to the audience, showing us that these are the main reasons why Willy pressurizes his sons to be more successful with their personalities than their education as this is his way of living, and his way of learning how to grow up to be successful forces Willy to live his façade. “Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead.
Durkheim suggests that the highly skilled members of society have the most important jobs therefore attaining a higher pay and more rewards. As a result of this a conflict arises that is ‘resolved’ by socialisation via; the family, media and or religion. In modern day the recession causes more stress within this institution therefore faulting the socialisation process, causing more problems and also creating disharmony. Talcott Parsons agrees with Durkheim on how the jobs are ranked in society and how the most functional jobs have the highest rewards. Parsons also believes that the family socialises these qualities in the form of norms and values.
Willy aspires to be just like him (60-61). Edmund Phelps claims that the happiness Americans want is found in social success--loving and being loved A study commissioned by Strayer University found that 90% of Americans define success as “achieving personal goals and having good relationships with family and friends” (Mekouar). Clearly, social success is just as important as economic success. This is relieving to Willy. Even though he has not become rich, he can rest happily knowing that everyone loves him.
Their relationship was ill fated from the start due to the different outlooks that each regime held. Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek led the GMD and Mao Zedong led the CCP. The reason why the GMD lost the Civil war in China from 1946~1949 was because Chiang became notorious for his corruption and inefficient and inflexible, whereas on the other hand the Communists were persevere in nature and worked upon enhancement of tactics that brought them to rule the country (Wood and McManus, 73). Chiang Kai Shek’s conduct during the Nanjing decade up until 1948 was not received well by many sectors of the Chinese society. Chiang was notorious for launching “reign of terrors against wealthiest inhabitants of the city” (Spence 361).
