DANGER SIGNS DURING THE POST PARTUM PERIOD Maternity Nursing The actual birth of the child can appear to be the endpoint, or “exhale moment” in the childbirth experience, many other contributing factors play a role both the physical and mental well being of the new mother. The post partum time is one with many changes, both physiologic and psychological. While it is easy to be caught up in the new mom’s accomplishment, there are signs and symptoms to be cautious of that could point to a deviation from the norm. Some of the complications following birth are mastitis, metritis, post partum depression, post partum hemorrhage, subinvolution, thrombophlebitis, uterine atony and uterine inversion. Mastitis, an inflammation of the breast or breasts, is a common problem which happens usually within the first two weeks postpartum. Lactational mastitis occurs in about 2% to 33% of breast-feeding women (Jahanfar, 2012). It can result from any event that creates milk stasis such as insufficient drainage of the breast, rapid weaning of the baby, oversupply of milk, and pressure on the breast from a poorly fitting bra, a blocked duct or missed feedings (Cusack & Brennan, 2011). Along with being very painful for the mother, it is often a reason that women discontinue breast feeding. The most common infection to enter into the breasts is S. aureus (Gilbert, 2011) which comes from the infant’s mouth and enters the breast through small cracks or fissures. A breast abscess may develop if the mastitis is not diagnosed and treated correctly. Signs of mastitis are flu-like symptoms felt by the mother (fever, chills, malaise); also breasts are red, tender, and hot to the touch in one area of the breast. Treatment includes effective milk removal, pain medication and antibiotic therapy. It is advised that the milk can be expressed through infant sucking or manual
