Dale Earnhardt Sr. A tragic loss to a great sport, a man that only knows competition and driving, Dale Earnhardt Sr. is a pop culture icon who has made a positive impact on our society because of the seven championships he has won, the driving style that shaped Nascar to what it is today, and the attitude that agreed with his fans. He was born Ralph Dale Earnhardt on April 29, 1951 in Kannapolis, North Carolina, to father Ralph and mother Martha. Earnhardt was a legend in American stock car racing, nicknamed the Intimidator for his competitive instincts and hard driving style. Ralph Earnhardt was a local stock car racer in North Carolina. He wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps and be a great driver also. Ralph and his son were seen as natural born racers. By the age of 17, he had 40 year old responsibilities. He had already married his first wife and was expecting a child. Finances finally caught up with Dale causing his marriage to fall apart. As a teen he dropped out of school and worked at a local shop welding and mounting tires. After he clocked out he was headed to the garage to get his car ready for the weekend. Dale’s first racecar was a pink number K-9 that he raced in the hobby stock division locally. He was restricted in his racing because he was supporting himself out of his own pocket.
