You also need to make sure you have good relationships with other staff members so that it can be a friendly place for the children to be around. It is important to have positive relationships with all the people that are involved in the care of all children and young people in my setting . These people could be staff, Managers and supervisors, carers/parents, OFSTED, Early years, or external partners. All positive relationships with these people will benefit the child as we could share the information quickly and accurately give constant care and always identify their needs and there interests. We could make more effective plans for their care and education whilst monitoring there welfare to show their skills and ideas.
Positive relationships enable information to be communicated far more effectively. Working in a school this will benefit pupils when you are dealing with parents or carers as they will be more willing to get involved in the child or young person’s education and care. Building and maintaining positive relationships and effective communication with pupils will help them know and understand what is expected of them and acceptable boundaries. In order to develop positive relationships with children, young people and adults effective communication is vital. To effectively communicate we must: • think consciously (everyone is an individual) • explain (be clear, use appropriate language) • listen actively ( occasional nods and eye contact) • be true to our word (say what you mean, mean what you say) • recall (repeat snippets of what has been said to you) • have empathy (non-bias understanding of others situations) • clarify and question (ask the other party if they understand what you have said ) • body language (your own and reading the other persons) Not putting the above skills into practice will create barriers to effective communication and positive
Expressing thoughts and ideas – in order to encourage children and young adults to talk about what they learned and what they think, or encourage them to express themselves imaginatively, communication skills are also needed. Effective communication is also needed when giving and receiving support. Very often children and young adults need reassurance and comforting, and it is very important how professionals use their communication skills to build child’s self- confidence. Practitioners need to praise children and encourage them to succeed in their learning and give them the support they need. Practitioners need to build positive relationship with not only their key children and other children in their setting but also with the children’s parents this gives them a better chance of giving children more support at home. At the setting parents can get involved and this will benefit planning for the child as parents know their children better than anyone and they will know their likes and dislikes and will be able to help them with their development. This is so the practitioner can act on the advice and put it onto the planning. This advice can have more experience in different aspects of the child’s life. This then helps with the care and learning needs of all children as if the child has a disability which affects their learning. The teacher will have to get another professional in that knows what they are doing to help care for the child and help with the child’s learning. This means that the child will be getting a full learning experience and understand the lesson because it is easier for them.
By making myself available when a young person has wanted to talk on a one to one basis, quite often this may take place when I maybe driving them to an activity, has been a successful way to help build trust and relationship with that individual. I also believe that being consistent and being aware of our own actions and displays to the young person that we are people that can help keep them safe and secure and somebody that can be trusted. It is also vital to build and maintain positive relationships with other people involved in the care of the young person as we should share a common goal, the welfare and development of the individual. We can achieve this by open and honest communication, sharing of information, and by ensuring that those involved in the care of the young person are trained to a standard that enables us to deliver that care and support to a professional
