National brand versus store brand On February 26, 2013 I went to Safeway on 2nd and San Fernando near San Jose State University to compare two house brand items versus two national brand items. It was around 4pm and the only workers to be found were either at the register or behind the counter preparing food for hungry customers. As I walked down the aisle, the first thing that caught my attention was these 99cents ketchup that were on sale from its original price of $1.99. When I got a closer look at this brand of 99cents ketchup, I’ve notice that it was a store brand because right at the very bottom right there was a Safeway logo on it. Each of the reactions to my deviant behavior of shopping out of another’s cart was met with anguish. Despite the items not being theirs until after they are paid for, many people are under the assumption that having the item in their cart gives them ownership of it. The reactions were negative due solely to their belief in personal possession of the unpaid for items. My evening of shopping out of other people’s carts gained me a great many negative reactions. My deviant behavior brought upon many dirty looks, some surprised looks, as well as aggression.

Crozier also read a passage from her memoir, Small Beneath the Sky, in which she looked back on learning to read. The manager Lengel does not seem to be too strict at first but has his ways I feel. Reading the story in first person we see the day in the life at work through Sammy’s eyes. He sees three girls come into the grocery story with only swim suites on. He nick names theses girls as “plaid, big tall goon goony, and queenie.” These names come to him I feel as the way that he sees the girls and how they carry themselves. Sammy keeps his eyes on them while they are shopping and in my eyes I feel that his way of watching over them.
