Cultural Diversity and Diet By: Deborah Dominie Principles of Sociology SYG 2001 Instructor: Jonathan Brooks Everest University January 23, 2014 You have asked for our opinion about eating toasted ants, about eating fried frog legs, about eating puppies and kittens, and about eating raw monkey brains. You also stated in this assignment that if we were reared in the U.S. society more than likely we would think eating frog legs is okay; eating ants is disgusting; eating dogs and kittens; and eating raw monkey brains is downright repugnant. Then you asked us how we would apply the concepts of ethnocentrisms and cultural relativism to our perception of these different cultures. So therefore, in this essay you will find my opinions to these statements and the definitions to the different types of sociology theories and the terms for ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. The different cultures around the world have their own types of customs that they are used to having. There are many different types of diets that the different cultures use. They are unlike the diet and nutrition here in the United States. In Colombia culture, people eat toasted ants to me this would be something that I could not see myself doing. As for frog legs even though I live in the U.S. and was raised here I am the type of person that if all there was to eat was frog legs and vegetables I would have to get just vegetables. Because, eating an animal whose environmental nutrition is consuming flies is disgusting. As for eating puppies, kittens, or raw monkey brains I could never find myself eating any of these. It is understandable that these different delicacies are natural for many people around the world. Since each part of the world contains people who function differently than they do here in the U.S. and that due to their different cultures their symbols such as hand gestures have
