Introduction “Best in the world, best for the world”, is the mantra of John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems. Mr. Chambers cares about the company’s obligation to society so much that this mantra is written on the badge of every employee. This says a lot about the company and its commitment to corporate social responsibility. Hewlett Packard is another company that takes it responsibility towards society no less seriously. Shane Robinson, EVP and CTO HP, states that “Global citizenship is integral to the success of HP’s business. From how we develop products, run our operations, and manage our supply chain and engage with stakeholders, it drives us to accept challenges and pursue solutions that are the lifeblood of continuous innovation and growth. It also guides our decision making, ensuring that we uphold the values that have helped distinguish HP as a leader committed to using technology to benefit people, business, society and the environment.” This paper intends to compare and contrast these two stalwarts of Silicon Valley with respect to how they are creating shared value. The paper will look at these two companies as a whole and will also look at some products, like Telepresence, WebEx and elucidate they usefulness in creating shared value. Porter defines the concept of shared value as economic and social upliftment of communities resulting from policies and operational practices of a. Shared value is not just volunteering and donating to the poor, but creating true value in society leading to betterment and overall well being of society. Creating shared value is integral to company’s profitability and competitive position. Porter goes on state that there are three key way in which corporations can create shared opportunities: i) By reconceiving products and markets, ii) By redefining productivity in the value chain. iii) By enabling local cluster development.
