Crosby vs. Gretzky Canada’s own Wayne Gretzky is undoubtedly considered the greatest player ever in the fast-paced game of hockey since he dominated the game in the 1980’s. However, the tables have been turning in the last a few years as Sidney Crosby, another young Canadian, has emerged as a dominant player and taken the professional league by storm. Comparing the two players isn't easy. The game of hockey looks drastically different than 35 years ago; it has been constantly evolving and technology has helped players move faster, become physically stronger and has made them better equipped to deal with injuries than ever before. Wayne Gretzky’s accomplishments are well known; he still holds many records in many different categories and is considered to be the best player in modern hockey. In his 10 years of playing so far, Sidney Crosby seems to be on par with Gretzky. Comparing their playing styles, both athletes are very similar in terms of their game sense, vision on the ice, and individual skill. Crosby and Gretzky played hockey in different decades; they are both the dominant players of their generation, but for Crosby’s accomplishments and lasting influence to match Gretzky’s, he will have to wait for the judgment of time. In 2013, the game of hockey looks drastically different than it did in the early 1980’s. The evolution of the sport has created a much stronger game than ever before. The NHL players today are bigger, faster, and skill level is at an all-time high, as The Edmonton Journal states, “There is a general trend in the population that over time, generally, we're seeing gradual increases in height, weight and body-mass index” (Edmonton Journal).
