SJSI 6001 Critically analyse the evidence that lifelong learning promotes urban regeneration. Discuss with references to an examination of policy and theoretical debates. The author of this essay will focus on lifelong learning and the impact it has on regenerating communities. Poverty will also be touched upon and how lifelong learning can help in the eradication of poverty and help promote urban regeneration. The author will also discuss the current flagship policy put in place by the Coalition Government of the United Kingdom, ‘The Big Society’ describing how it can help regeneration projects through its Citizenship Education projects and also the areas of concern due to the current economic climate. In the nineteenth century, the United Kingdom had the natural resources, the labour force and the inspiration to lead the world into the Industrial Revolution. Today, we are witnessing a different type of revolution. For developed countries who cannot compete on natural resources and low labour costs, success demands a more service led economy and high value-added industry. In the twenty-first century, our natural resource is our people, and their potential is both untapped and vast. Skills will unlock that potential. The prize for our country will be enormous, higher productivity, the creation of wealth and social justice. The alternatives? Without increased skills, we would condemn ourselves to lingering decline in competitiveness, diminishing economic growth and a bleaker future for all.
