“Critical analysis of article on Oedipus rex” In this article the role of knowledge and perception is examined in the light of Oedipus rex the play by Sophocles. First the language was discussed and later the events that take place in the play are analyzed. It is said that the blameworthiness in discussion of Oedipus is attached to the unavoidable ignorance of the protagonist. But the conditions that have the greatest effect on him is not only because he is ignorant rather he sometimes acts like he knows what he does not. First of all the scene with Tiresias is an example of Oedipus’s perception. What he thinks is what really isn’t. He accuses Tiresias of plotting against him because he has a secret motive. Right after this he accuses Creon for plotting against him for the throne. This shows that what he perceives things are exactly how he perceives it. He not only fails to recognize the truth when it is placed in front of him (i.e. his guilt) but he only ends up seeing what really isn’t there. Then he as predicted by the oracle starts to investigate the murder of the king who was murdered by the band of robbers at the crossroads as said by the herdsman. If the gods had set a stage for Oedipus’s downfall he was the one to take it. He was the one to take the road to hell and furnish the raw material provided by the gods especially Apollo. Everything every step in the play was set up in a way that Oedipus was bound to follow. But at another place we see that when the whole thing is about to unravel Oedipus some what becomes prejudice and say’s: Let break forth whatever will. I, at least, will be content to see my birth, Even if it is insignificant. She, perhaps, because she has a woman's Pretensions, is ashamed of my low birth.
