The problem causing factors will always exist because there will always be environmental issues, developmental issues, situational issues, and cultural issues that help create the problems in society. Although there will never be a cure for problems there will always be somewhere to go for help with ones problems. Therefore there will always be the need for the helper who has the skills required to help those in need. As the problems change and the need for help changes so will the necessary skills of the helper change. As more is learned about causing factors the helping skills will change according to the diagnosis of the client.
Counselling/ counselling ideas may help to cope with the challenges of ‘change’ ‘The more I am willing to be myself in all this complexity of life […] the more I am willing to understand and accept the realities in myself and in the other person […]” Rogers (1961). In order to tackle changes in a client’s life, it is important for the counsellor themselves to be self-aware and have an understanding of others’ values, beliefs and attitudes although they may conflict with their own. The counsellor is there to help the client adapt to these changes, helping clients to push out old information and take in new- this however is also an aspect of change which the counsellor has to help the client pursue whilst keeping ethical and professional boundaries. Changes are accompanied by strong emotions, both negative and positive and counselling is able to support the transition from one state to another. When looking at coping with change it is not possible to ignore some of the events which change our development, life events which cause significant change are called transitions (Jeffery, J in Aldridge, S & Rigby, S 2004).

Program evaluation is needed so workers can remove anything from their program that was not needed, or add more attention to another direction of the program. Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Brian Kenning NAIT Abstract With the rise of post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) in the news after the returning of the military in the United States, I believed there was a gap in which I would like to learn a little more regarding the effects of stress witnessed on the job can relate to affecting an emergency services worker in their life outside of work. This search for information brought me upon the topic of critical incident stress debriefing(CISD), and its effectiveness in helping distressed individuals in working past their problems. Initially contained in this report is a brief history of CISD, and its founder, Jeffery Mitchell. It will touch on this methods of finding a working program for emergency workers to deal with the on the job stressors they face every day. Mitchell himself was faced with responding to a dramatic car accident, the feelings of anger and terror became hard for him to deal with in the following 6 months.
Although you might not be a victim of PTSD, it is important to be aware of the problem. This disease has many life changing effects that not only changes you as a person but also your relationships. There is a variety of treatment used to help patients of suffering from PTSD. Whoever notices symptoms of PTSD should seek for assistance right away. Victims have to learn how to manage their trauma in order to attempt to live a normal life.
Disaster preparedness training can help such people in improving immediate physical safety and logistics issues that are involved with a traumatic event (Shalev, 2004). This training can offer important preventive factors against developing PTSD. Conclusion PTSD is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation so preventing it can be impossible. PTSD not only affects an individual but also his family and the society. Families that have PTSD victims can benefit from counseling, parenting classes and conflict resolution education.
