Research shows that teachers are more likely to label middle class children as 'bright and well behaved' but working class children as 'naughty and disruptive'. Following the label being attached on the child is self fulfilling prophecy, this is when the child will respond and act according to the label being placed on them, so a middle class student will act well behaved and complete the work that is set whereas the working class student will disrupt and not complete the work set and therefore not do well in exams. This shows that labeling working and middle class students affects the educational achievements because of their social class. However George H. Mead can be criticised by material/cultural deprivation. Material deprivation is when the child doesn't have the right equipment for school e.g. books, and cultural deprivation is when the children
Control Theories can explain why Tre and Ricky have both conformed to society by building bonds with people they trust and who can instil positive values on them. For Tre, one of the individuals is Furious, who mentored Tre in teaching him how to live an honest lifestyle and shaping him into a conforming individual who was able to separate himself from most deviance in the community. Furious’ mentoring shaped Tre into developing values and characteristics which he holds tightly within himself which were, in evidence, much stronger than external influences of living in the ghettos. One of the most predominant theories which can explain deviance and inequalities in Tre’s neighborhood is Subcultural Theories. During one of the first scenes, Tre gets into a fight with one of his classmates while he was living with his mother in a wealthier part of Los Angeles.
Some of our juveniles today are very misguided and are often following the wrong crowd. The parents of these juveniles feel that they have done all they can do for these children in trying to provide the best life for them but, as it will be seen in this paper it does not matter the type of background these juveniles come from peer- pressure is possibly the cause for some of the statistics that we see. Although There are many different theories about what influence juveniles to commit Delinquent acts the thing that influences juvenile the most is societies. The Reason for this is the fact that society labels an individual according to their upbringing, Their environment and their lack of education. The main purpose of the Juvenile justice system is to rehabilitate juveniles so that they can become a Contributing member of society and not another career criminal.
The second positive aspect of crime which makes it functional for society is changing values. Durkheim stated that every so often, when an individual commits a crime, there is a degree of sympathy from the public. This hints at a change in values which can eventually lead to a change in law. This was seen in the change in attitudes towards cannabis use. This, Durkheim argued, is functional as crime allows values to be changed as time passes in order to adopt the current perceptions and attitudes the public holds.
This labelling can lead to the self-fulfilling prophecy; this disadvantages them because the teacher is favouring other students. However, teachers are more likely to label a middle class child as smart, intelligent etc. This puts them at a starting advantage over their working class peers. Marxists suggests this is creating inequality, and reproducing the ruling class ideology as they are above working class from an early age (5). A middle class child is more likely to be placed in a higher set, as Bowles and Gintis says.
Argumentative Essay To: Mr. Dotzko From: Jean-Marc Francois Due Date: December, 19/11 Child spanking is a huge issue in our world today and some people consider it abusing each other while others say it’s fair discipline. These opposing opinions have been going on for a while according to our law system there’s a fine line between abuse and child spanking but a lot of people say it’s bad parenting to spank children and shouldn’t be done. Child spanking is a fair way to discipline your children and is not abusive according to the Human Right Code. It’s an effective way to discipline children and get them into shape but it can be considered abuse because it causes a lot of increased aggressiveness in children. Child abusing and child spanking are two completely different things and I think that it’s just fine to discipline your children with spanks and that it’s not abusive.
THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION PROCESS Assess the effectiveness of the criminal investigation process as a means of achieving justice. Within the criminal investigation process one will analyse how evidence such as DNA and increasing police powers affects the offender, victim and society differently. Over time the rise of new law creates different problems which must be considered in the criminal investigation process. It is important to consider how different elements of the criminal investigation process such as technological evidence, police powers, search and seizure and bail. Ultimately at times the criminal investigation process strives to achieve justice for all parties involved but may adversely affect one party differently.
Theories on Crime Comparison Carl Boone AJS/542 July 25th 2013 Jeffrey Begley Theories on Crime Comparison To understand crime and the elements that help compare and contrast motives, influences, and patterns of criminal behavior; theories are developed under models of thought. This process is called criminology and it is the study of crime and criminal behavior with some focus on lawmaking as well (McShane, Williams, 2010). Criminology has continued to be one of the cornerstones of our judicial system. The scientific research that goes into understanding individuals and societies, along with the variables involved, help the criminal justice system better understand issues that relate to crime. Criminology was first born in the eighteenth century and although it was not initially concerned with the aspect of understanding crime and criminal behavior, “it gained its association with criminology through its focus on lawmaking” (McShane & Williams 2010, ch.2, p. 15).
Teaching the test seems to be conducive to improving test taking skills but real academic progression is not always represented. Additionally, Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation in a way to prepare students for life and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests.
Models of Organized Crime Chameta Isom May 27, 2012 CJA/384 Instructor Leroy Hendrix Models of Organized Crime All criminal organizational models consist of similarities and differences but the main purpose is to benefit law enforcement, researchers, society, and professionals with a better understanding of how criminal organizations develop domestically and internationally (Limbaugh, 2008). Models are based on supporting research, statistics, facts, and convincing arguments that have been gathered by professional psychologists, sociologists, and criminologists. Information presented focuses on organizational structure, purpose and cause, members, and clientele. Models are extremely importance for understanding organization crime as each provides a wide-range of beneficial information. Models just like theories can display what geographical locations are more prone to the development of criminal organizations than other locations.
