Critique on Do Video Games Kill? This article “Do Video Games Kill” by Karen Sternheimer addresses the wide spread idea; video games are the cause for “young killers” (210). Sternheimer believes concern for the influence video games may have on youth is spiraling out of control. She put most of the blame for this out of control concern on the media. She also writes some about politicians and the Juvenile Justice system.
This, a system founded upon the principal of rehabilitation, yet in reality, is more interested in imprisoning non-violent criminals indefinitely than providing them the help so desperately needed. It sickens me that the United States allows for such a horrible thing. Private prisons in the United States make millions of dollars off of their own prisoners. It is simple, the more prisoners the prisons have the more money they make. Private prisons enjoy a guaranteed profit with every inmate they house.
Cloward and Ohlin argue, that the majority of criminals involved in the drugs trade were unable to succeed within capitalism and were driven to an illegitimate means of obtaining wealth. Cloward and Ohlin further argued that as people were driven into this illegitimate structure they tended to join existing deviant subcultures i.e. the drug subculture as in the case of the drugs trade. Crimes were committed by the commoners; the poor, out of desperation and lack of resources they needed to survive. (Elizabethan crime and punishment) Some of the most common crimes committed by the commoners were theft, and begging. Adultery; to have a sexual intercourse with someone who is not your husband or wife was a common crime done by commoners.
Cocaine Kids showed how society views most drug dealer, with stereotyping them as gangsters with big gold rope necklaces, fresh kicks, and nice cars. It was a bigger chance that the Cocaine Kids would get caught because of where they lived, the areas that they stayed in promoted drug use. There was more of a risk of being caught for drug dealing that is why certain extensive procedures were followed in Cocaine Kids. It was to the degree of the market almost having its own “miniature society with institutions, laws, morality, language codes in behaviors of its own.” (Williams, pg.2). A person would think people with money would be looked down upon because they buy these illegal drugs but there is less stigmatizing because they have disposable money.
However, convictions are rare due to the careful cover-up of evidence and a lack of reliable witnesses. One example of common behavior among organized crime groups is community manipulation. By offering threats of harm or promises of protection to the surrounding citizens of the community the organized crime group gains power and the ability to continue their criminal activity with a lesser chance of being caught. Law enforcement relies heavily on information from citizens while conducting criminal investigations. Organized crime participants are master manipulators and can easily instill fear in the citizens within the area.
And if they think they need the benefit or if the gain is much more then the punishment, then they will probably choose to do the crime. And there is also the sociological theory. This means that people are committing crimes because of their environment. What I mean by this is, people that live in areas like the government projects or low-income housings, do not have a lot of money so they resort to maybe selling drugs. They probably choose to do so because this kind of enviornment are flooded with drugs and they can be easily bought or sold to make money.
They help the illegal immigrants in crossing the borders for money and financial issues. It is extremely dangerous and trafficking usually involves physical force as well as deception to transport immigrants. There are many large groups that smuggle immigrants into the United States and they are very well known. The illegal immigrants take jobs from other U.S. citizens that are in need and continue to burden the social services. I think it shows that we do not care that much about trying to control the borders and prevent this from happening.
