Even though nurses work together as a unit, it always helps to have a leader. The leader is a more experienced nurse then other member of the nursing team. This gives other nurses someone to look up to and feel comfortable going to during a difficult situation and when you need assistance. Leadership Transitioning In the article The Future of Nursing Leadership: A Commentary, by Kenneth R. White, FACHE, he describes how nursing leaders play a larger role then only on the units. According to White, K. R. (2014) “Nurse were the original servant leaders—at the patient’s beside and in communities- and now they are perfectly positioned to take their experience with leadership to a heightened level.
The Human Resource Management team has the ability to make the necessary changes to combat the nursing shortage. Rearranging workloads amongst staff members alone would help immensely. The majority of nurses experience burnout from a combination of factors such as age, emotional tiredness, depersonalization in the work area, and a feeling of underachievement being that so many tasks are placed on any one individual. We must remember that illness will always be around. Without the help of Human Resources, the problem of maintaining a healthy patient to nurse ratio will continue to grow.
Workplace Fatigue; Finding a solution to this common problem I chose to talk about workplace fatigue because it is so common among all types of nurses and needs to be addressed and worked on. A big thing for nurses to do is to understand their limit and signs that they are becoming too tired or stressed. When nurses get stressed it starts to affect their lives at work and home. A major problem with fatigued nurses is patient care. The fatigued nurse becomes overwhelmed and can easily make mistakes such as medication errors or performing procedures on the wrong patient.
Caring is perhaps the one word or phenomenon most clearly associated with nursing over time. Nurses promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. They have a unique scope of practice and can practice independently, although they also collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to provide the care needed by each patient as an individual. Nurses are hands-on health professionals who provide focused and highly personalized care. Nurses also serve as advocates for patients, families, and communities.

Of every leadership role in health care today, a nurse manager has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their health care experience. Theirs is a far-reaching role with particular impact on achieving a professional culture that successfully recruits and retains expert nurses. In today’s dynamic and complex health care environments, safe and effective care will only be assured when health care leaders can make their optimal contribution to the effort. Nurse managers must not only fulfill their daily responsibilities, they must lead the change demanded that will secure a bright future for American health care.
Nursing Burnout According to McIntyre & McDonald, (2010) “Problem-solving and decision making have been ingrained in the discipline of nursing since its inception”(p.6). Today nurses are feeling at an even greater need to examine and articulate issues facing them in practice on a daily basis. Nurses are also faced with increasingly complex issues in multiple areas of practice, the need for political advocacy has emerged (McIntyre & McDonald, 2010). With a growing sense of leadership and political action, nursing advocacy has led to examination of topics in search of resolutions. High levels of work place stress and professional burnout continually affects nurses and other health care workers globally.
Crystal Ospina a Registered Nurse at NYU Langone medical center. Most of us are familiar with Nursing because this type of healing is a part of our society today and highly accepted. Nursing can be described as the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and aid in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. There are some common root issues when it comes to nursing and western medicine in general. Some problems are overcrowded/understaffed hospitals and it requires you to use healthcare plans that are often general and cannot always serve a specific individual.
Also when I was in the hospital I saw what the nurses did and I thought it was pretty interesting. After all this I decided this was something I knew I wanted to do. Nurses have many daily activities that they must follow in order to perform their duties. The activities or roles the registered nurse may change depending on the day or the patient. All nurses have a scope of practice they must follow but depending on the patient will tell them what procedures to perform.
There is currently a larger nurse-to-patient ratio than most nurses would like. Along with the stress and long hours associated with the career choice of nursing, nurse burnout is a very common complaint in today’s society. Nurses often complain of being short staffed and having too large of a patient load. Interest in this topic comes from wanting to pursue management at some point in my career and working on a floor in which a second shift nurse could have twelve patients. Not only will nurses feel better, but better patient outcomes occur when units are better staffed.
