Prompt 1: Explain the developments in consumerism, media and art in the 1920’s. Make inferences concerning possible connections between these developments. During the 1920’s there were great developments in the fields such as consumerism, media and art, which all fed off of each other. At First can the developments of consumerism. The nations out put had risen 60% percent due to the aftermath of the civil war. Everyone had begun buying products because they wanted them it was not a necessity. Women began buying things such as make up and clothes while the Men bought cars. By the end of the decades more than 30 million cars were on the road. They had ‘ pink collar jobs’ which were basically low paying jobs such as being secretaries, telephone operators, and sales clerks. By this time women were getting higher education so two or three generations would end up being college graduates. Although this was true only 25% of married women worked outside of home. Ideas had changed throughout time, such that women began relying on doctors, nurses and teachers instead of trusting their instinct. This created a greater sexual relationship between the wife and the husband. They were less willing to allow their children to get into their relationship. They wanted fewer children to work on their relationship. This was one of the reasons birth control was created. This created a freer woman that was able to smoke, drink and wear clothing that was considered seductive. They made clubs and started parties such as the national women’s party that was created by Alice Paul who proposed an equal right amendment in the 1923. Since a lot of people wanted lower immigration numbers the congress passed the immigration act which decreased the numbers of immigrants from 800,000 increase in a single year to 300,000. Although the number of immigrants had decreased dramatically there was still much hatred among the different ethnicities especially towards the African Americans. This triggered the creation of the Klu Klux Klan also known as the KKK. The Klan began in 1915 for the reason that they wanted America to be filled with people who were just like them. This was led by protestant Americans trying to get America the way it used to be. In the 1920’s there was also the question on how to be able to fit religion into the daily lives of people. There were 2 groups The modernists and the fundamentalists. The modernist believed that things should be modern and realistic.
