COMPUTER WARGAME SIMULATIONS – THE WAY FORWARD Introduction Know your enemy and know thyself, posited Sun Tzu, 2600 years ago. A military strategist or planner must clearly understand the threat to develop an apposite response to the intentions and actions of the adversary. The response in order to befit the enemy operational cycle has to be visualized in its entirety, thereby playing with all the options and digesting the resulting scenarios in a virtual “game” to perfect the war fighting strategy and tactics. From Koniegspiel to the wargames of World War II and contemporary times, wargaming is an established pastime of military minds. Military historians believe that a significant Japanese strategy of kamikaze attacks was overlooked during the wargames and US Navy had to scramble to cope with these attacks then. Complex military operations of the present age involving vast array of forces and associated machines cannot claim success by accident. Military leaders spend years preparing for war, through deliberate and methodical training. Wargames immerse commanders in a situation where the enemy is highly trained, determined and unpredictable. The simulated environment trains the commander and general staff to develop response and confidence in their ability to operate during wars. Simulation of war milieu to stimulate thought process and consequent decision making of the commanders and military leaders is achieved through wargaming. Inspired by a modern technology obsessed revolution in military affairs, the field of wargaming has been transformed by computer simulation and analysis, hence transcending past the human intelligence and into the realm of artificial
