Many of these populations face more challenges than others. One such population is the homeless population. “There are 671,859 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States” (National Alliance to End Homelessness). In this paper, the topic of discussion will be the vulnerable state of homeless people and how critical thinking is used to identify the causes of problems or issues for this population.

Homelessness has been a social problem worldwide for decades; however, the homelessness in Pinellas County has been an ever growing concern for city leaders. In 2011 the homeless population in Pinellas County was nearing about 8,000 (Point in time [PIT], 2011). This number includes homeless persons who were sheltered, unsheltered, from school data, and law enforcement (PIT, 2011). In 2009, the homeless population was 6,300(Pinellas County Health and Human Services [PCHHS, 2012).
To look at how different homeless people act in a society, looking at in a sociological perspective is necessary. Homelessness is a social problem that occurs and is prolonged in social structures. It is also a reason why social problems happen; social structure is important to survive in the society because it provides a social web where we can gain social support and relationships that links us to a larger society. The social organization and how it is maintained throughout the society is what the functionalism theory is all about. In a lot of the homeless people this connection has been lost, which results to losing both their dignity and their moral sense because of their homeless condition (Neal, 2004).

Whatever may be the reason for a person becoming homeless, it is the issues that arise from being homeless that are the crucial aspect. Homelessness can have many affects on a persons wellbeing, both physically and mentally. Being out of home can have many implications to a persons health.
