“Teaching English Pronunciation to Vietnamese Students” and “9 Essential English Pronunciation in the Vietnamese Context” A Comparative Synthesis As the time goes by, the number of Asian English learners is growing rapidly in Asia as well as in Vietnam. This huge growth opens a new market to those who wants to invest in education. As a result, there is an English language center on every street corner especially in big cities but there are some crucial questions needed to be asked , how well do these centers can respond the learners’ needs? Are their teaching methods sufficient to solve the pronunciation problems of Vietnamese English learners (VEL)? To be able to answer these questions we must be aware of what are the basic pronunciation mistakes that Vietnamese make when they speak English and what could be the possible strategies to teach English with accurate pronunciation to Vietnamese learners? In these two articles “Teaching English Pronunciation to Vietnamese Students” by Antonio Graceffo (2010) and “9 Essential English Pronunciation in the Vietnamese Context” by Tran Thi Lan PhD Senior Lecturer, Hanoi University of Foreign Studies, these matters are investigated. Those who worked as an ESL teacher in Asia may easily realize that pronunciation is always a problem for Asian learners. The authors Graceffo and Lan figure out some possible solutions which they think may help VELs to speak English accurately. According to Graceffo there are some problems that Vietnamese face when they learn English. He believes that the reason why most Vietnamese are having difficulties to pronounce the sounds is lack of listening practice.
