After about a year, Kanan is back and playing on the Varsity Soccer Team. Not only is he working hard every practice and every game, but he now realizes how lucky he is to have the ability to play once again. “I see john working as hard as he can on the field but I also notice that while he is giving everything he has, he is in a lot of pain,” said Andrew Cornwall ’14. Even Today Kanan is having minor difficulties with his knee, but luckily he was gifted with a successful recovery. “I never realized how fortunate I was to be able to play soccer without having a constant pain in my knee,” said Kanan.
This happened in 2004 when Southern California (USC), Oklahoma, and Auburn all finished the regular season undefeated. The BCS could only pick two teams to play for the national championship so they chose USC and Oklahoma. Southern California ended up winning the game that game fifty-five to nineteen. A few days before, Auburn played Virginia Tech and beat then sixteen to thirteen. After everything was over Auburn finished the season undefeated from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) arguably the best conference in football and did not even get a chance to win a championship, even though they did everything they possibly could do.
You would think being the best football player in the school, I would get more respect from my peers but nope everyone calls me the dork who has a 4.0 and plays football. I’m still wondering why it’s bad to be smart now days. Every since I moved here I was teased from day one. There is only 20 days until graduation and I’m so excited to be leaving this dumb. “ AH Kevin, what you thinking about”, asked my best friend Shawn.
The BCS or Playoff I believe in the BCS system. When I think of college football, one word comes to mind, tradition. It’s one of the most exciting sports in the country, and people can’t get enough. Every weekend from September to January, countless fans flock to games or glue their anticipated eyes to TV sets. As teams battle on the gridiron, billions of dollars each year are generated in revenue.
Bitter Sweet It was a warm and windy Tuesday night in the middle of March 2007. Thee soccer playoffs were here, bleachers were packed and boy was I nervous. It was the first ever appearance in the postseason. All week our team was on edge, we were just so excited but nervous at the same time. For some of us seniors this could be the last game that we ever suit up for.
My birthday was Saturday August 8, which was also my first football scrimmage against Cordova High School. The scrimmage had been for three teams, Rosemont, Cordova and Capital, and my teammates and I were the underdogs of the whole thing. When we got to Cordova it seemed as though it was going to be a routine scrimmage, get on the field and kick some butt, but fate had other plans. Our team started off slow in warm ups, taking wrong moves and such, but we started to pull it together after about thirty minutes. When we entered the stadium to play we were a little early so we got some water and started getting each other excited to play.
The Colts got the ball back and the fans started to boo their team as they left the stadium. The final score was 35-27. The Colts improved to 11-0 in the season and Houston fell to 5-6. I was proud to see my team win despite them coming back from losing by 13 at halftime. Attending my first NFL game was a great experience for me.
The two trained together every day, and while kids went with their families on vacations over summer, they just trained even more. The constant training and high standards left Todd unfit to live a healthy lifestyle once he got to college. By the time Todd got to USC, he was a national star. He broke the national high school passing record and became the first ever freshman to start for USC. Everything
February 2, 2008 was our biggest most consequential game of the year, for our varsity school soccer team. The year could be described by some as a year of rebuilding and upset after upset. Yet to many of us it was a year of growing and building of friendship. The match that was lurking closer and closer was against Sunnyside High School who we had previously defeated in a nail-bitter style game. Nevertheless we knew not to underestimate them for they were currently ranked 2nd in this vast sate, that encompassed many commendable and worthy teams.
We earned the number one seed in the section and were on our way to our goal. We got to our first game in sections against a much worse Truman/Martin Luther team. Nerves got to use in the first half and we were only up by ten points on a mediocre team. After our coach got on us during halftime, we came out in the second half and dominated the game winning 73-48. We had a great week of practice looking forward to the second game of the section playoff.
