Hate Crimes A hate crime can be defined as “an act motivated by bias or prejudice” (Hate Crime FAQ’s). For something to be a hate crime, a crime must actually occur. Most types of hate crimes focus on ones race, religion, color, gender, and sexual orientation. This paper will mainly focus on hate crimes dealing with racism. Racial hate crimes are a problem we face in America and something that is getting worse every year. Being at Temple University, it is easy to see a lot of racial tension and there is always a fear of a hate crime happening. Hate crimes are a problem because they are being committed across our country and they are very hard to determine, as shown with the brick incident at Temple. There was an incident in Texas in December 2013, where a white man was charged with a hate crime for assaulting an African-American (Black Justice Department). The cause of the assault was due to something called the “knockout game”, which people basically knockout a random person for no reason other than to “win” the game (Black Justice Department). In this case, a Caucasian man assaulted and injured an African-American. When tried for this case, he was found guilty, and charged with a hate crime (Black Justice Department). I found this to be very interesting. I am not arguing that this should or should not be seen as a hate crime, but was the motive behind this really because the victim was a different race? If believed so, then why aren’t all cases similar to this charged as hate crimes? There are countless robberies, assaults, and criminal acts committed by African-Americans to another race, that are a lot similar to this case, so why aren’t these being seen as hate crimes? There have been a bunch of anti-white knockout game assaulted reported, that just get overlooked ad ignored (Black Justice Department).
