Most of the African Americans were just slaves to the Whites. The African Americans didn’t usually have any say in their lives because they were unequal to the Whites. The African Americans were forced to sharecrop because they could not afford their own land. Their pay was less than minimal. The African Americans were treated unfairly and they were the first group of people that were laid off during any economic downturn.
His idea of slavery had changed very much by the time he wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Unfortunately, not everyone saw slavery from the same moral standpoint. Only a month after being published, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was banned by a library in Massachusetts, and many more did the same. Some white people who were not abolitionists immediately tagged it as trash and an attack on their beliefs, even though slavery had been abolished for a while by then. Blacks often thought of it as racist, even though it was generally accepted as an attack against racism.
After the civil war ended, the United States of America was still being exposed to vast amounts of racism, while people continued to fight for equal rights and freedom. Slavery was officially over in 1865, but there was still no equality for the blacks. In place of having the Negroes enslaved, the former white slave owners and racists alike would instead continue to oppress them by further segregation and assault, while the white authorities turned a blind eye because they were often part of the problem. In society, they were viewed as second-class citizens; forced to use segregated areas of washrooms, entrances, restaurants, public transit, and recreational facilities; such as churches. It took nearly one hundred years for the black population
When these soldiers left in 1877, many state governments chose to persecute black people and limit their rights. Despite the laws of the federal government, they soon took away black people’s rights to vote. Last but not least the systems of sharecroppers spent more than their share was worth and fell heavily into
Over time progress has been made in putting a stop to the inequality among races and different ethnicities. However, African Americans, individuals of the Arab descent, Asian Americans, as well as other ethnicities continue to be discriminated against amongst the Caucasian race. Several prime examples of discrimination occur in such organizations, airports, government buildings and even in our police. Organizations such as the KKK formally known as the Ku Klux Klan, the Ku Klux Klan has existed from the year of 1865. KKK members dress in white sheets and cover their faces.
Negroes up North have no respect for people. They think they can get away with anything” (132). After being warned by her mom to pretend she did not know about Emmett, Ann is forced to suppress her feelings of anger towards the white people who committed this act. However, she also starts to feel resentment grow for the colored people who pretended to not care about his death. This anger at the Caucasian race for the inequality of the races eventually spurred Ann to join the NAACP, a group put together to fight racism and fight for equal rights.
Although America is traditionally described as a “melting pot”, it is ironic that the racial segregation and discrimination strongly exists in physical blocks, economy system, and media world. “86% of whites live in neighborhoods where minorities make up less than 1% of the population”; ethnic minorities face the “glass ceiling” in the business world, and the media make fun of colored, especially black people. The myth of the melting pot is one of the most paradoxical and controversial myth in society. On the one hand, most Americans agree that diversity is beneficial and fundamental for our society. But on the other hand, whites still regard the myth as a threat because they think it will harm their “priority”.
They held jobs such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of the white children. They did not have control of their own lives, their white superiors gave them orders on what to do all day and they did not have much time to themselves to do what they wanted. In the article “The Mammy Caricature,” author David Pilgram writes “the mammy caricature implied that black woman were only fit to be domestic workers” (Pilgram) which describes what their household duties were and how they were treated. The job of the “mammy” was a full time job with only little time to rest which only consisted of the couple of seconds in between each of the household duties they had to do. Many of the maids wore the same so called uniform, as stated by Stockett “I put on my white uniform and put my little good cross back around my neck and I went to wait on Miss.
America itself is no stranger to racism. In fact, the annuals of history are full of American legislated racist policies. Many of which in southern states of America are actually still in the books of law. Much of the police brutality we have seen in the recent years has been construed as a continuation of that racist tendency. As true as this may be, Baltimore is quite different and has led many to question this narrative.
Some black males were not allowed to vote, while others lost employment opportunities. These harsh laws followed up underneath the Fugitive Slave Law. The constant undermining view of African Americans being inferior to white people in every way continued to spread throughout the northern states. During 1820-1860, the American society was very selfish. The average American focus was not on the inhumane treat against the black people but the competiveness that was caused because of the black people.
