Paper on Cognitive Interventions Based on a discussion among the students in the team; they all agree that before an intervention could be initiated it is important that prior to beginning treatment, the patient and therapist should meet for a consultation session, or mutual interview. The consultation gives the therapist the opportunity to make an initial assessment of the patient and recommend a course of treatment and goals for therapy. It also gives the patient an opportunity to find out important details about the therapist's approach to treatment, professional credentials, and any other issues of interest; before the starting of a session with a therapist, how can the client who has had a minor stroke and is fearful of falling…show more content…
One of the interventions that the team chose will be discussed thoroughly; although, cognitive interventions could be used in so many different scenarios depending on the condition of the client that will be treated. Cognitive Behavioral therapy, or behavior modification, trains individuals to replace undesirable behaviors with healthier behavioral patterns; based on this cognitive behavior the students will share, discuss and give examples on how an elderly person who has had a minor stroke and is fearful of falling could be treated by using cognitive intervention. Also, the client will show some resistance towards the physical therapy treatments that will be offered; therefore, the students will provide some possible approaches to aid the client to accept the therapy. According to Journal of Advance Nursing (May 2011) Fear of falling is a major health problem among community-dwelling older persons who had suffer strokes. The prevalence of this fear ranges from 29% to 77%, indicating the importance of developing effective strategies to reduce fear of falling among elderly adults. Therefore, a study was conducted on how to help adults through cognitive-behavioral strategies and intense Tai-Chi exercise. The conclusion of the study to help the elderly population at risk of falling was positive indicating the researchers that this cognitive intervention with Tai Chi exercise enhanced the elderly with mobility, to manage fear of falling and to increase their quality of life.
