Introduction This paper will discuss the Perceived Stress Scale, Mini-Mental State exam, and the Beck Depression Inventory. It will identify how the test is done, what appropriate age the test can be used, and how these test would help in the nursing process. It also relates to the vulnerable population of psychiatric patients. Assessment Tool Analysis To be able to assist patients with their physical, mental, and psychological health concerns, assessment tools may be used. This allows the medical staff to use the knowledge they obtained in school in order to help the patients in improving their life.
The initial consultation is a chance for the person receiving therapy to understand is going to happen during hypnosis and what they can expect from the treatment An initial consultation form could be sent to clients to fill and return before the interview in order to give the therapist a better idea of the questions to ask when they meet. The questions asked in a initial consultation form should cover basic details such as the clients name and address and it is important to remember to ask what name they like to be known by and what is a suitable time to make contact and whether or not it is appropriate to contact them on the numbers given, there are clients who would perhaps not want to be contacted on a work number or in the evening in front of their family and it is important their wishes are respected as a matter of confidentiality. Many people are still wary of this kind of therapy and have misconceptions on how much control they have during the session and a usual concern for clients to have is could they be made to anything they wouldn’t do normally such as cluck like a chicken every time they hear the word lotto. This is a good opportunity to build up a rapport with the client and discuss any fears they might have and to reassure them. The client will often feel vulnerable and is to all intents laying bare inner secrets that would not normally share with a complete stranger so by reassuring
•Part of the students’ training may involve reviewing some patient records and test results. •If any of our students or staff involved in any research project would like to use information about individual patients for research, the patient or their guardian will be kept
You will also need to have some knowledge of the choices in the future management of the patient's condition. • It is helpful to mentally rehearse the interview, the likely questions you will be asked, the patient's emotional and potential responses. • While it is important to remember that the bad news may be very sad for the patient, the information that you will be giving will be important in allowing him/her to plan for the future. • It is strongly recommended that a colleague such as the patient's named nurse or specialist nurse accompanies you. This individual may remain with the patient if appropriate and help provide continuing support to the patient.
Sometimes patient’s neurological deficits get resolved after a few hours or days and that calls for change of treatment plan. How do I know the nursing intervention to perform on stroke patients? It’s through empirical knowing. Empirical knowing is the ‘science’ of nursing, it can be systematically organized into general laws and theories that are used to describe, explain, and predict (Carper, 1978).Empirical knowing is knowledge obtained from school lectures, text books and journals. Empirical knowing focuses on evidenced based practice which leads to effective nursing practice.
As well as the initial consultation providing an assessment forum for the therapist, it should be remembered that the client will also make judgements relating to the therapist. How the client feels during the first consultation is likely to affect how he / she will respond to hypnotherapy. The way the therapist presents him / herself will create a first impression for the client who may be feeling apprehensive or nervous, especially if they know little about hypnotherapy and what to expect. A calm, professional environment will assist with making a good first impression with appropriate décor and furnishings. Muted, neutral colour schemes in the therapy room are least likely to ‘anchor’ the client to any previous negative associations regarding strong colours and should hopefully not provoke strong feelings or distraction in the client.
Word count 1,883 Why is the initial consultation so important? What factors will an ethical therapist cover at this time? In this essay I will discuss the importance of client consultation, talk about the questions the therapist should ask the client and the ethical reasons and contraindications the therapist should be looking out for. When a person has a specific problem, whether it is a fear or phobia or something they wish to change about themselves, they may consult a hypnotherapist to help them overcome their problem, during hypnotherapy the therapist will address the clients specific needs. But before the therapist can decide the correct route to therapy it is necessary for them to conduct an assessment of the client during the first consultation.
The following piece of work will explore and analyse one particular aspect of teaching and assessing a pre-registration student(student) in a mental health unit setting. The overall aim of the teaching session was for the student to gain a greater understanding of the use of Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) and be able to competently prepare the patient for the procedure, support the patient during and after the procedure with supervision from experienced staff. I was aware of the varying preconceived beliefs and ideas that the student may have regarding the procedure which led me to think carefully about what I was doing and saying, and also whether the student would become too stressed or upset by the procedure. The teaching session took place following the compulsory admission under section 3 of the mental health act (1983) of an extremely depressed man. He had been prescribed ECT twice weekly, and although he was not in compliance with this, Section 3 of the Mental Health Act (1983) allows compulsory treatment if it is felt to be in the best interests of the patient.
Another alternative psychological treatment is the use of cognitive behavioural therapy. This involves educating the client about the illness and the process of the treatment. The therapist and client must establish a therapeutic relationship so that the bond of trust is developed. In some clients, rapport is developed by the therapist being genuine, respectful and empathic. During the therapy, the client must do homework and actively confront their own problems.
As she said some students they have had in the past just hang around waiting to be told what to do whereas if I saw someone doing something I offered to help. There I quite a few things I need to be doing when I go back on placement like being more confident around the patients/service users as I think that any signs of nerves they will pick up on this and take advantage. My mentor also advised that it would be a good idea if I became familiar with some of the drugs that they use on a regular basis and gave me a sheet outlining the common drugs used in mental health nursing and she also gave me a copy of the British National Formulary (BNF) and said that if I was ever unsure about a drug I was administering I should always look in the BNF. I also need to remember to always minimize personal risk by always staying at least an arms length away from a patient and to give them lots of space and never to get stuck in a corner and if anyone does start to show any form of aggression I need to be firmer and explain that that behaviour whether verbal or otherwise is totally
