I will explain how I see these three theories when going to a high school basketball game. Structural Functionalist Theory- In basketball there are some key factors needed to make it work. You need five players on the court for each team, a ball, a court, two baskets on both sides of the court, and two or three referees. Without one of these the game just wouldn't work, to make it work something would have to change. It's like a major change in society, to compensate, something else would have to change.

What is Sport Sociology? Ronnie Green Colorado Technical University 01 / 03 /2014 Introduction In this assignment I will give a brief essay on, what is sports sociology and how it affects our community. I will discuss sports sociology according to high school basketball games in my own home town which is the sport I selected for this essay. I will give brief details about the fans, players, and why do people participate in such large numbers at any games. Finally, I will sum everything that not mention in my conclusion.
Sports sociology is a sub-discipline of sociology which focuses on sports as social phenomena. University student Craig Crossley who has done numerous presentations on Professor Peter Figueroa, Figueroa developed a tool to investigate the issues surrounding access and equality in sport and physical activity. Figueroa’s frame work was constructed over 5 different levels individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural. We will be focusing on the Institutional level. We will be using Figueroa’s Framework to identify inequalities that I have encountered during my time playing basketball.
Discussion 1 Refer once again to the assigned Unit 1 articles (for example, the one titled "Coaching: The Ten Killer Myths."). Identify 2 or 3 statements, concepts or ideas from these articles that have been substantially confirmed by your learning about and practicing coaching over the past two months. In the von Hoffman article, “Coaching: The Ten Killer Myths”, there are a number concepts and ideas that have been substantially confirmed by your learning this semester. For instance, coaching is just another name for mentoring, coaching is managing with a happy face or coaching doesn’t add to the bottom line. What I have learned is that coaching deals with the whole person, and whole people have emotions.
‘I’m going to practice my free throws in basketball until I can score 5 in a row’. A goal is set; the person is motivated and must simply implement the exercise. Why is the person motivated? What drives them to create and perform such a task? There are two types of motivation; extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.
The focus will be to train them in basketball. This will be a time for them to escape from their uncomfortable and dangerous environment and have them channel their energy into positive outlets. They will participate in other youth camps for the title of Youth Team of The Year. This will help them gain a sense of team work, and a sense of comradeship. In all these are my ambitions and my life goals.
“Basketball” Invention of the game James Naismith was a Canadian American physical education instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. In December 1891 , the director of the school, Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, asked Naismith to find a physical activity to occupy a "class of incorrigibles." Naismith may have other motivations as well. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that relied solely on strength. He needed a game that could be played indoors in a relatively small space.
Overall, the degree to which basketball has advanced over the years is amazing and has become one of the major sports all over the world. The game of basketball was first invented in 1891 by Dr. James A. Naismith (Laughead). While holding the position as a physical education instructor at a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith was given the challenge of developing a game that could be played inside during the winter months. Additionally, he wanted to create a game that required a certain degree of skill rather than one that relied primarily on strength. After only two weeks of thinking, he came up with the basic concepts that would later define the rules of basketball.
