Beds: From Crib to Coffin A bed is a piece of furniture on which a person may recline, sleep, or as a place to “entertain”; sometimes we have a choice of the style of bed we rest our weary sole, alas other times we do not. Some types of beds are limited to one period in your life cycle, yet others can be useful throughout a lifetime. From infant or child stage, teen to young adult, and adult to death, the bed no matter what type, is constant in our lives. Most of the time, depending on your living conditions, and the choice in the style of bed you sleep in is up to you. Infant beds, commonly referred to, as a crib is a small bed specifically designed for infants and very young children, generally up to the age of two. Infant beds are designed to restrict the baby to the bed. The sides are normally slated enough to allow for visibility in or out of the crib but, designed to prevent head entrapment. The rails are too high for a baby to crawl or fall over and can be lowered for easy access to the child. As an infant, you have no choice in your first beds design or features. You are at the mercy of your provider. A toddler bed is a small bed used as a stepping stone or transitional bed between an infant bed or crib and a regular bed. These beds have small side rails on each side to prevent accidental rolling out of the bed while asleep. Rather than being fully enclosed like a crib, a toddler bed is low to the ground to facilitate safe and easy entry and exit. At this point, most toddlers are developing their sense of identity through likes and dislikes. Themed beds such as racing cars or action heroes are available to appeal to their taste. Twin beds are also known as single beds. They are the most common choice for children’s rooms or multi-use guest rooms. These beds are narrow and fit easily into the smallest bedroom.
