Alice was raped and beaten by an African American man on May 8th 1891 at Syracuse University. One of her initial worries was how she would hide her rape from her mother because she believed if she told her mom, it would trigger a “flap”. Alice did not believe her mother had the coping skills necessary to deal with a daughter who had been raped. When she did tell her mom, her mom did not have a panic attack but drove straight to Syracuse to pick up Alice and bring her home. In the following days however, when Alice tried to tell her mother the details of her rape, her mom admitted she could not bear to hear the details and perhaps she should talk to someone else.
Finally she did but now she regrets that she didn’t move on because she put her family in a hard position. When she first arrived at elsewhere she wanted to kill herself by crashing into a retaining wall using a car, but fortunately in elsewhere you can’t kill yourself because their age will rewind and she will get younger so she can’t kill herself even if she tries to. “Liz drives the car in to the exit’s concrete retaining wall” (Zevin 53) but nothing happens to then or the car. It makes her frustrated, because she had many things she finally can and want to do when she turns 16, but she died a few months before she turned 16 and this is something really hard for Liz to forget but she has to because she can’t go back and she has to move on. Later on she remembers that she still has a sweater to give her dad so she makes another trip to the well again and this time she finally dived into the ocean but this has caused her and her family more trouble.

My daughter Jasmine, who is 13 years old, is really a defiant pre-teen and lies about not coming home on time and fights with my five year-old boy; this stresses me out enormously. My daughter Kiara, who is 17 years old, has a 5 month-old son which also causes me to stress because she wants to get married and keeps on asking me to sign so she can get married. Every time I say no, there is crying and a cat fight because I tell her she is too young, and she is not ready for it. Last, but not least stressful, is my financial difficulties. My husband, is the only one that works.
