History of Bollywood - BOLLYWOOD History of Bollywood History of Bollywood At the turn of this century, when the country was poised for major social and political reforms, a new entertainment form dawned in India-the Cinema. The first exposure to motion pictures which India received was in 1896, when the Lumiere Brothers' Chinematographe unveiled six soundless short films at Watson Hotel, Esplanade Mansion, Bombay on July 7. And the first exposing of celluloid in camera by an Indian and its consequent screening took place in 1899, when Harishchandra Bhatvadekar (Save Dada) shot two short films and exhibited them under Edison's projecting kinetoscope. Hiralal Sen and F.B. Thanawalla were two other Indian pioneers engaged in the production of short films in Calcutta and Bombay in 1900.
How did the Lumières' activities influence the development of world cinema? The Lumiere brothers thought the cinema industry was going to be just a fad, so they didn‘t want to sell their machines. Instead they went on tour abroad and showed films in theatres and cafes. Their catalogue of one shot scenics expanded quickly and included views of Spain, Egypt, Italy and Japan. The Lumiere brothers were known for their topicals and scenic movies; they produced staged films that were mostly short comic scenes.
CINEMASCOPE: Trade name used by 20th Century Fox for its widescreen process. First Cinemascope film was The Robe (1954). The 35mm image is “unsqueezed” in projection to a 70mm image. From The Great Train Robbery (1903)) to Casablanca (1942) , Hollywood film studios made major scientific advancements in film production. In the next thirty-nine years they move from the first silent narrative film to the classical Hollywood style. Nevertheless one aspect of film making still remains the same; all films are based around a plot or narrative idea. Classical Hollywood style shows us how these major movie studios can now bring their films to life with sound, camera angle and what was called “point of view shots”. New forms of lighting (three-point lighting, high-key/low-key lighting and star lighting) and editing made it possible for filmmakers to make feature-length films.
Eventually this led to the creation of motion pictures film in 1891 by Thomas Edison. After motion pictures were created, the film industry expanded
Although both Preston Sturges and Frank Capra use imagery and comedy to deliver messages in their respective movies, Capra’s ability to express his ideas in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington regarding perseverance conveys a much more poignant message, despite Sturges’ more recognizable views about smiling through the pain in his movie, Sullivan’s Travels. The comedic elements of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Sullivan’s Travels add to the theme of each movie, subtly giving away major plot points. Both movies draw the audience in with the use of farce, such as when Sturges has Sullivan and his companion pushing each
