Christians nowadays have become bored with the routinely repetitive and medieval liturgical services, and seek change or a new spark to reignite their faith. Modern Christians have birthed a obsession to claim the worship is “fun” - fun is basically the summary of joyful and lively- and prove that Christians know how to party in church. While I advocate the idea and stand for having “fun,” I find the reality hard to grasp: to be lively and joyful should not be our primary motive when we leave to worship God. Our main goal is worship God in reverence and awe, and thank him for his mercies in Jesus Christ. There is no reason why celebration cannot be included in that, but worship in God is a time to be silent, reflect on your life and pray for help of others. “Joyful” and “Lively” can stand for completely different meaning for different people. While “joyful” worship for some may be singing hymns, receiving Holy Communion or even just praying to God; others may define “joyful” as speaking in tongue or just enjoying God freely without a set form of worship. Then the answer to “Should Christian worship always be joyful?” must surely be yes. As joy is the basis of worship to worship God, to receive and give joy. Whereas, “lively” worship is in a complete different set of worship, and the definition for this rarely varies from people to people, and if I was to rephrase the question again to “Should Christian worship always be lively” than the answer would have to be a resounding no. When we gather to worship God, are main thought is not to be merely entertained or momentarily distracted from God’s greatness. Digression is not the same as worship. Our happiness is all grounded in God’s nature and acts. That’s not to say that if my church offered me the choice between liveliness and woe, I’d take liveliness too. But maybe it’s not about the choice? Yes I do believe that
