Title: Chris Christie: The Boss Thesis: Today, I’m going to compare the leadership of Governor Chris Christie through the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to the Skills Approach to leadership. Introduction: I. It was October 2012 and Super Storm Sandy had just ripped though New Jersey. - 159 people were killed due to drowning, according to a report from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. - Sandy damaged or destroyed 650,000 homes and over 250,000 insured vehicles, including my grandmother’s. - 300,000 business properties were also affected, according to a report from global reinsurance firm, Aon Benfield. - During Sandy’s immediate aftermath, more than 8.5 million customers lost power, according to FEMA. - The hurricane was the first time in modern recorded history that a storm took a sharp turn to the west and hit New Jersey. - A scientific study said it was a once-in-700-years track. - The scope and cost of recovery was estimated at $50 billion, compared to $55 million for recovery of Hurricane Irene that occurred in August 2011. II. Hurricane Sandy was one of the most devastating things to happen to my home state. So many of my family and friends’ homes were completely destroyed. As mentioned before, my grandmother lost her entire vehicle, my aunt lost the first floor of her home, and a family friend of mine lost her entire house. III. Unfortunately, it did take a very long time for things to start getting back to normal for the residence of New Jersey. The slogan “Stronger Than the Storm” held very true, especially for those who lived in my city as well as neighboring cities. Body: I.
