Communication is vital in building that positive relationship needed for trust and respect, something that is very much needed when working with children, young adults and their parents. It is also important that we model positive and effective communication skills when we are asking pupils to think about how themselves are communicating. You need to be able to make yourself approachable, as some children can find it difficult to connect with adults. Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults in all aspects of life and at any age whether it would be with relatives, friends, neighbours, colleagues or even total strangers. Also effective language skills are essential for children to access the curriculum. In the classroom, spoken language is the main way that teachers teach and children learn. Therefore if the skill of communicating in an effective manner isn’t learned or grasped at an early age then it could lead to various difficulties in terms of interacting with other people. In my experience, good communication is also important when clear expectations and boundaries are established and point made as plainly and as simply as possible.

The government document Every Child Matters: Change for children 2004 is an important document to read which would benefit anyone working with children. For effective partnership working I need to ensure that communication is clear and this can be formed between a number of organisations, agencies or individuals with a shared interest in the young person. Effective partnership working should be centred around the young person with common goals to be achieved for the best interests in that young person. If I work effectively with partner agencies problems and concerns can be identified early and the right help given in a timely manner. 1.2 Explain the importance of partnership working with: Colleagues It is vitally important to work in partnership with colleagues as they work with the young people in my care on a daily basis. By working together the outcomes for the young people in my care will be better than it would otherwise by working alone.
1. – Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. Communicating effectively within the school setting, young people and adults are very important to enable strong relationship to build between children, young people and adults. To developing positive relationships with the children is the main key to a happy and calm environment. Without a positive and supportive attitude there will be no trust and honesty between yourself and the children.
Effective communication is also important so that information given is clear, concise, accurate, and informative. This decreases the possibility of errors being made. It is important to work as a team with other members of the setting, so that the child is getting the support the need and so that ever one is working to achieve the same results and goals. Within my own we use a range of methods to communicate with parents such as, monthly newsletters, class teachers hand-outs/diary informing parents what their child is doing each term, letters and posters. Having effective communication with the parents is important so that they know how their child is doing and what is happening at the nursery.

How effective communication affects all aspects of your work There are many different aspects within the job role that require good, effective communication to enable the job role to work and to develop the role as a practitioner working with children. The person communicating must send the right message but must also ensure that it is being received and understood correctly by the other person; therefore it is a two-way process. There can be talking/verbal communication and non-talking/non-verbal communication. To communicate effectively you must: * Be extremely clear about what you want to say * Be sure that the other person is understanding what you are saying to them * Try and consider the other child/adult’s point of view as well * Have a rapport with the child/adult that you are communicating with The clearer the information given, the more likely that it is that the other person will understand your point of view. If unsure on the best way to communicate, support should always be given as it’s not always easy.
