Communicating with Children, Young People and Adults There are varying levels of communication required when working with children, young people and adults alike. Whilst working with children, young people and adults it is of the utmost importance that your trust is earned so that a trustful and honest relationship may develop. To ensure that the relationships that develop are honest and trustful, your behaviour has to be fair and in a professional manner at all times. At different age groups children require different levels of attention dependent upon both their age and stage of developmental ability. When a child first starts school they may require more contact and reassurance than when they reach their 2nd year of school (key stage 1 year 1). During key stage 1 effective communication involves lowering to the child’s level and speaking to them and asking them to repeat what has been said to them to check that they have understood what has been said to them. During a child’s school life their confidence will grow, and by the time they reach key stage 3 they will be able to communicate more effectively both verbally and non verbally. By the time they reach key stage 4 they will be able to communicate further through the advancement of technology , emails have replaced letter writing and mobile phones allow children and young people to communicate with friends and family in a larger virtual space (e.g. social networking), texting and phone calls.
