Chevron/Texaco – oil disaster in Ecuador This paper will introduce about one of the famous and big oil company’s impacts on Ecuador. In this paper I’ll introduce short history of Chevron/Texaco and its impact on Ecuador. We will see here its bad and negative influence on Ecuador nature, animals, waterways and inhabitants in it, local people. The paper will discover for us different aspects and questions related oil disaster in Ecuador caused by Chevron. Here we can find the answers to the questions why it happened, when it happened and how it happened. Finally in the last header I’ll bring conclusion of this problem through the company's corporate social responsibility case. Company History In 1879 Demetrius Scofield and Frederick Taylor discovered oil in Pico Canyon California. This led to the formation of Pacific Coast Oil Company, which is the founder company of Chevron Corporation. Since this year Chevron joined to the several companies and changed its name and had several logos. In its history it’s recorded the names such Pacific Coast Oil company, Standard, Chevron, Texaco, Gulf Refining, Gulf, Caltex, Chevrontexaco, Unocal76 and Chevron. On Oct. 9, 2001, Chevron and Texaco merged and started to perform as a one company. Company called ChevronTexaco Corporation. This was a second biggest U.S based company with more than 11 billion barrels of oil and gas reserves. In 2005 ChevronTexaco announced it would drop the Texaco. After this it changed its name and became Chevron Corporation. Chevron in Ecuador In 1964, Texaco (now Chevron) discovered oil in the “Oriente” which is located in the northern region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The habitants here are small nations like Cofán, Siona, Secoya, Kichwa and Huaorani. They lived with their traditional life far away from the civilized world.
