Cher & T- Pain: Unlikely Bedfellows The original use of Auto Tune was to map out the earth below ground. The Auto Correlation machine sent out sound waves which would bounce back and and record reflections with a geophone. Its primary job was to detect oil, and t was a very valued machine in the industry. Eventually the creator Andy Hildebrand took his machine and started using it in the music business. He had taken some music classes before his engineering work, and realized that his machine could also alter and fix human voice. Originally the software was used to “correct flat or sharp notes” but eventually it turned into a musical effect (128). When it first came out, it was designed to “perfect” a voice by correcting small little mistakes to help the voice flow smoothly. Soon artist like Cher, Madonna, Jo-Jo, and most notably T-Pain, started recording songs that have altered their voice incredibly that many started to question whether or not auto tune was ethical. The controversy that Auto Tune started is, is it right to change your voice so much that it sounds nothing like you? Is that right? People who have no “true” musical talent with their natural voice are becoming famous because a machine has “perfected” them. Auto Tune takes away the feelings and passion of the artists real voice, and gives the song a deeper meaning. As a society, we strive for “perfection,” but nowadays that’s all we hear; songs have gotten to be all to similar and fake. True, lyrics still hold value, but they aren’t sung with passion, although some may argue that. Personally, I find Auto Tune to be a disease that has spread like an epidemic in our culture. When you turn on the radio to a station such as B96, it is almost impossible to find a song that hasn't been altered by auto correlation. To me, artists who create songs completely in Auto Tune deserve less
