Trapped in a Bug’s Skin “The Skin I’m In”, is a common quote one familiarize themselves with but what about “The Bug’s Skin I’m In”. “The Metamorphosis” examines that from a bug’s point of view of how things changed around him. Gregor Samsa, the protagonist in Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” is an ordinary, responsible, and devoted individual who undergoes an actual and mental metamorphosis. While experiencing that stage, his shiftless father, Mr. Samsa, his weak mother, Mrs. Samsa, and his nurturing sister, Grete all play a role in how Gregor analyze life through a bug's perspective. Gregor Samsa is a traveling salesman who has never missed a day of work nor has he called in a sick day. He takes care of his family's finances in efforts to pay off the debt his parents owe his boss. He shoulders the responsibility in the Samsa family. Although his job is a tough one he continues to be the man of the house. He does not question or complain to his father as to why he does not work or his mother and Grete for that matter. He just simply wakes up every morning and head out for work. At times, he may feel like “Oh God,” he thought, “ What a grueling job I've picked out! Day in and day out – on the road.” (Kafka, 4). Even when he woke up and realized he was an insect, his whole mind set was on getting to work. Gregor is devoted to his job although he hates it. He puts time and effort day in and day out in order to pay off his parent's debts. He is devoted to his family as well. His father even stated “that boy has nothing on his mind but business”. (Kafka, 10). Being a traveling salesman is “a grueling job” (Kafka, 4) which is dissatisfying. Gregor stated that “If I didn't hold back for my parents’ sake, I would have quit long ago, I would have marched up to the boss and spoke my piece from the bottom of my heart”. (Kafka, 4).
