She finds that hard to believe because boys aren’t supposed to be scared of crawly things, and Patrick had wanted to do this project. He tells her that he thought she wanted to do the project. Chapter 12-B Julia knows that Ms. Park has a worm phobia and accuses her of being sympathetic to Patrick. Chapter 13 The caterpillars stop eating and get ready to spin. The explanation in paragraph 2 is more effective because… Discuss with your partner: Analyse the following quotes, explaining what they show about Lennie’s character. You do not have to use the whole quote – you should select the language you think is necessary. Slowly, like a terrier who doesn’t want to bring a ball to its master, Lennie approached, drew back, approached again. George snapped his fingers sharply, and at the sound Lennie laid the mouse in his hand. “I’d pet ‘em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead – because they was so little” They sat by the fire and filled their mouths with beans and chewed mightily.
Lennie faced a lot of dilemmas in “Of Mice and Men” and Cosmo has faced some dilemmas in his show. Lennie was faced with the choice of doing right or wrong, the tricky thing is he doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong. He just remembers (sometimes) what George tells him. Lennie doesn’t know what is right and what is wrong so when a woman yells because he is pulling her hair too hard he covers her mouth and suffocated her. The reason he did this was because George told him not to mess with her and if he does he could get them in a lot of trouble and possibly ruin their dream of having a farm together.
Candy is presented by Steinbeck as being very observant in this passage as he says “I seen her give Slim the eye … Curley never seen it,” he shows he has the ability to see things from different angles a fact that is made possible as he is disabled. Candy is also shown to be knowledgeable but mostly judgmental as at the end of the passage he says „well, you look over her misses, and see if she ain‟t a tart,‟ this shows that he is judgmental of Curley‟s wife who he hasn‟t spoken to but has based his view upon look. Steinbeck uses the character of Candy very cleverly to convey important ideas about society at that time. The book is set in 1932 at the time of the great depression and in a time of racism. Candy is described as „stoop
Lennie loves George and counts on him a lot of the time. Lennie values George and his belief of tending the rabbits. Lennie also loves soft things like mice, pups, girls’ dresses, and hair which produce terrible results. Lennie is utterly helpless and totally defenseless. Lennie doesn’t know right from wrong and this leads to a terrible outcome.
Tired of constantly reminding Lennie of things he should remember, George gets quickly angry when Lennie forgets to get the firewood, for example, and instead goes after the dead mouse. On the other hand, George's anger is quickly under control, and he blames himself for scolding Lennie. In fact, Steinbeck makes clear that, despite his complaining and frustration, George looks out for Lennie and genuinely cares for him. Without companionship we have nothing, relationships with other people can define who a person is. Whether that relationship is with a dog, as in Candy’s case or with a wife like Curly.
They had previously been working in a town called Weed but had to leave because Lennie tried to pet a girls dress, just like he used to pet mice. The girl had gotten scared and tried to run away but then Lennie had gotten afraid himself. And when Lennie gets afraid he starts holding things harder then he already is. The girl had gotten away but Lennie had ripped her dress and she, of course, screamed rape. George often mentions that life without Lennie would be much better.
Doing this is important to a modern audience as the play includes hints about future events that are unknown to the characters, so the hints are meant for the modern audience as they have prior knowledge that the characters do not have. This is device is known as a dramatic device, which is where the audience knows things that the characters in the play do not. Examples of this occurring are when Mr Birling says “Germans don’t want war” near the time of WW1, and when he says the Titanic is unsinkable. This is important as this gives the audience certain feelings such as anger, and to show Mr Birling’s ignorance towards other people. Priestley’s aim to writing this play is to convey the message that we have a responsibility for each other, and what could happen if we are ignorant about ourselves and that we are “a part of one body” as the Inspector says in his closing speech giving
Many people kill every day, but should they all be held accountable for it? John Steinbeck’s novel contains many conflicts, but a main issue in Of Mice and Men, revolves around two characters, Lennie, a migrant worker with mental issues, and Curley’s wife, the wife of the bosses son. Lennie should not be accountable for killing Curley’s wife because Lennie is not all mentally there, and she provokes Lennie by demanding him to touch her hair in the first place. There are many reasons why Lennie is not to blame for his actions, one is because he appears to be slow in the head and has a very child-like mentality. In the text it states, “Lennie dabbled his paw in the water and wiggled his fingers so the water arose in little splashes...Lennie watched them go, ‘look, George.
“I remembered well how they beat me up the last time.” (Kaffir Boy 17) The narrator had no choice as he knew if he opened up the police would beat him up again. Because of previous experiences the narrator’s choice was already made. “Well, you keep away from her, ‘cause she’s a rat-trap if I ever seen one.” (Of Mice and Men 36) George is telling Lennie to stay away from Curley’s wife as he knows from a previous experience that Lennie will try to pet or touch the girl. This is another example where the event is determined by a previous
