Modern globalization validates a drive for a more interconnected and diverse society often characterized as a global village. However, the prestige and praise that is extended to large cities which have made the effort to enforce globalization, often overshadows the devastating environmental impact they have caused. The appropriate response is to encourage the principle of sustainability in order to raise the standard of human life without harming the planet in the process. A city such as Toronto must make efforts to become more sustainable as their energy use is higher than most other national cities, the changing climate is putting more pressure on the city’s energy systems and they are not taking full advantage of their non-renewable resources.…show more content…
Photovoltaic technology converts solar energy into electricity, which is an especially significant opportunity, as most of Toronto’s electricity is produced through nuclear, coal and natural gas generating stations (Energy 2007). All around the world for the past ten years the demand for this technology has risen with numbers showing a thirty percent growth rate (British 2012). Unfortunately, Toronto and the rest of Canada lag significantly behind the international community. Canada is behind nations such as South Korea and Mexico and has less than three percent of the installed base per capita compared to Germany, which is the world leader (British 2012).
