History 1301 November 22, 2011 Chapter 10 Alexis de Tocqueville was a freshman who came to the US at age 25 in 1831. He later studies the American people and their view in politics and published a book named Democracy in America. In this book, he also talks about how people I America deal with religion, the press, handle money, all political issues and what the outcome is. Another reason why this book is still very popular is for the fact that he was writing it during the 2nd Great Awaking. The 2nd Great Awakening was a religious movement during the 18th century. Romanticism was based on the goodness on the people. It wasn’t really about attending church or having a strong relationship with god; it was more about doing good deeds on earth so you could go to a better heaven once dead. Transcendentalism was almost the same but was more scientific. They would try to connect with everything and everyone around them while doing good deeds as well on earth. Romanticism had elongated books and articles and were very detailed while Transcendentalism were short narrow and worried about philosophies, concerns in their lives and yet were very creative.
