In its first year of publication, it managed to sell 300,000 copies to Northerners and Southerners alike. It greatly appealed to Northern abolitionist sentiments while simultaneously angering Southerners, who felt insulted by the general characterizations of them made in Stowe’s book. In the North, abolitionists regarded Uncle Tom’s Cabin as further rationale for anti-slavery activism. The book instilled into Northerners a stereotypical view of Southern plantation owners as cruel, demoralizing, and greedy whip-wielding masters. Simon Legree, the novel’s antagonist slave driver, became the archetypal Southern figure for whom Northerners felt much contempt.
However, even after its abolishment, blacks were still kept in slavery and were treated poorly and unequal to other, white Americans. This abuse was much more common in the Southern states due to the more racist nature of the white people who lived there and the fact that the Southern states had originally fought to keep Black Slavery legal. Soon after the Civil War was won by the Northern States, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment were brought into congress. The thirteenth amendment stated that all Slavery must end in America; the fourteenth amendment stated that everyone living on American soil should gain citizenship and the fifteenth amendment stated that all citizens should gain the right to vote. These amendments could be considered as vital moves towards black equalities, if they had worked.

In 1861, the United States entered into the Civil War, one of the bloodiest wars in history where over 500,000 soldiers died fighting to address slavery. The protest against slavery actually began well before this war through the written word. Three novels that had the most impact on the views of the American citizens include The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas by Frederick Douglas, Incidents of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs and Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The first two books were autobiographies of the authors who both were former slaves and they give a detailed description of their difficult and cruel life. Both of these books were well read and discussed.
Phuong Bui Professor Eula History 1B 5 Aug 2010 Seeing Vietnam War in Different Ways The Vietnam War was a Cold War military conflict, and American’s involvement in Vietnam stretched over 20 years (1954-1975). As any war, when Vietnam War is mentioned, we all seem to spontaneously spurt out deep human emotions. Humans lost their families; people lost their property. In general, it happened because of the conflicting ideologies at the time, the beliefs in communism and democracy. Every historian from different nations has different ways to comment about the Vietnam War.
