One possible way to deal with the growing problem of prison gangs and the violence that is often associated with them is to identify members and keep them separated (Demsky, 2009). This would not be an incredibly difficult task considering all gangs have some type of tag that identifies themselves to other members or even rival gang
The new focus of corrections and society as being “tough on crime” affects the lives in which inmates, officers, and the community must now live by. Donald Specter, director of the Prison Law Office in California, claims that this “’culture’ of our prisons virtually dictates the level of violence that you will have in
Interpersonal violence is a big threat to inmates and jail personnel. American jails are faced with the threat of overcrowding, and the threat to the society criminals who have been set free. Better prison management methods are able to solve the issue of overcrowding in jails. Violence against staff by prisoners can be addressed by having only experienced staff to oversee the jails. The threat that former inmates pose to the society can be addressed by better rehabilitation
This theory is defined as the pressure that individuals feel to reach socially determined goals. In 1938, Robert Merton defined this theory as delinquency as a form of adaptive problem solving behavior which the response to frustration and undesirable social environments. Merton states that goals such as wealth and personal happiness are often portrayed as desirable for everyone but means to these goals are equally available (Schmalleger, 2012). Because of the unavailability of these desires, this causes a strain, many turn to crime to get what they want/desire. The inmates in the Pelican Bay Prison have committed crimes, such as murder and robberies so they can get what they want without working for it.
Security Threat Groups and Gangs in Prison Janet Smith Kaplan University CJ130 Aline Major Security Threat Groups and Gangs in Prison In the United States of America everyone has the right to do as they please. This freedom of doing what you please have some restrictions. The restrictions are to obey and follow the rules and regulations of the law. People who choose not to follow these laws become a threat to the communities and the country safety and well being. People who feel the need for protection, to fit in, be a part of something or have a void in their social lives tend to join organizations or groups.
Young teens today join gangs due to the peer pressure of their peers, and for attention. I believe that humans are influenced into gangs by society such as in media, the government, movies, drugs and the main one our economic system. All my questions where answered after attending “Fresno speaking out against Gangs” and being able to listen to former members of gangs. The panelists told us life stories
Gaol plays a significant role in achieving justice for society and victims as it incapacitates the offender so they cannot reoffend, provides a serious punishment for serious offences and keeps dangerous criminals off the streets. However as seen in the study by the Bureau of Crime Statistics Research, outlined in the media article “Prison is an Expensive Way of Encouraging Crime Study Finds” (SMH 22.09.10) gaol is a very expensive form of crime control and may turn prisoners into worse offenders while charging society approximately $260 per day, per prisoner. Gaol also leaves the offender unemployed, with no money to survive when released and it may lead to difficulties finding a job with a criminal record. Therefore it can be seen that gaol plays a varying level of extent in achieving justice for the victim and society and for most offenders it plays a low extent in achieving justice. Another penalty applied during the sentencing process is an Intensive
Their influence on a community is determined by their criminal behavior, the abuse of their victims, and their participation in already existing gangs. Research proposes that involvement of ex-convicts in youth gangs increases the life of gangs and their level of violent crime, in part because of the ex-convicts’ increased taste for violence following imprisonment and history they contribute to youth gangs (Howell and Decker, 1999). Despite the corruption, prison can offer inmates a chance to form an irreplaceable bond. Without experience and advice, a prisoner cannot survive life in prison. In Felon, Smith acted as Porter’s mentor.
It states that inmates, who enter prison with certain characteristics such as abnormal values, bad attitudes and a violent/aggressive personality, are more like to contribute in interpersonal violence than other inmates. According to this theory, the brutality portrayed in prisons is not due to the prison itself, but stems from the attributes of those who enter such institutions. A lot of the behaviour
The surface might show cooperation, but scratch that surface and you will find a struggle for power (Henslin, 2013). Gangs have a jump in process. During this process weakness is beat out of those joining the gang. This deviant behavior shows weather a person can handle the demands of the gang life. The gang members will continue to perfect their deviance by fighting, or waging wars for other gang’s streets.
