Although Toula is in a Greek family with a strong cultural heritage, she is also an American woman. The cultural differences we see between Toula and her father show up early for her. She hates to hear how any word is derived from the Greek language, she doesn’t want to just get married and have babies, she wants to be educated and her father doesn’t like that. The intercultural communication competence is seen by both Toula and Gus having the motivation to make the relationship work although they don’t always know how. Tolerance for ambiguity is seen in the relationship when Toula wants to do things such as school that her father can’t imagine why she would want to when it is normal for most American girls.
On a daily basis the characters within these books have shown a devotion and an important, ongoing relationship with those that they feel stand above them. Gilgamesh made a libation to the god Shamash in hopes of a favorable message that would guide him on his journey. Aaron, a priest in Israel, conducted offerings and sacrifices to YHWH as a sign of respect and attempt at atonement for his people’s sins. Pliny, who eventually became a priest himself, did not live his life without showing gratitude to the gods on a daily
It’s very hard to explain, but I feel like I wasn’t connecting with the audience, like I was speaking a different language. Although, I think my topic made it easy for them to relate. I think this might have been because of my nervousness, Im not sure. I don’t have issues with speaking in front of my residents at work I’m very comfortable with them. Sometimes I find myself thinking at work, “see this is how its supposed to be in my communications class.” Memoria (memory) of the Five Canons of Rhetoric by Cicero was definitely my most weakest point.
With watching the video, Alan was dreading the “employee’s evaluation from the very beginning, this was something he did not like doing. The case with Gretchen, he seemed to me to be in the attack mode. He was prejudging her as to why she was not turning the work out faster. As our text explains, “When we prejudge others’ communication, we sacrifice learning information and new perspectives that might enlarge our thinking (Van Styke, 1999). I believe Alan thought she was probably just being slack, in reality Gretchen was taking her time and getting the jobs done with high standards.
A lot of them speak negatively about Kim, I think | |that part of this is because she is from another culture and they do not like that change. It also seems that specifically David was being | |self-centered on this particular day. He placed blame on Kim even though it could easily have been his own fault for not being clear with his | |instructions. He also clearly did not realize, or care that Kim had been working hard all day to finish many projects and had forgone her own | |breaks to help everyone else. Another reason why I think they resemble Theory X is because everyone brings their requests to Kim, they have little| |desire to try to do things on their own and take everything to someone else to be done.
Ironically, she is admitting Summers’ first point by herself implying that even she does not want to work 80 hours and she further argues that women are discouraged from making these time commitments because of discrimination in terms of earnings. This is ironic because Tong states that Summers is wrong and then through her offered proof confirms that women are hesitant to work 80 hours per week because it isn’t necessary or because they will suffer discrimination in terms of earnings. Unintentionally, Tong seems
Most students today know little to nothing about Vietnam thanks to the lack of photographs, as well as coverage. Some of the students Loewen had interviewed did not even know who fought in the war. A student of Loewen’s even wrote that showing the images of Vietnam during the war (specifically of the naked little girl running from the napalm attack) would completely change a student’s view of the war. However, because textbooks choose to leave out these stirring images, students still do not have the right outlook or sufficient knowledge of what happened in
With everything that has gone on in John’s past, a good wife would be there for John supporting him along the way, yet Kathy does the exact opposite. It was a big step for John to be willing to talk to Kathy about his issues, “Kath, listen, I need to tell you this. Something’s wrong, I’ve done things” (74) but Kathy shoots John down when he finally wants to talk about his past. She wouldn’t let him talk to her about it, and “she seemed nervous as if she was aware of certain truths but could not bear to know what she knew, which was in the nature of their love”(74). Kathy was being a selfish wife because she did not want to listen to, nor talk about John’s issues, and instead she chooses to ignore them.
How do they do it? Most of the time they don't really understand the material in the class, but somehow manage to pass with good grades. There are many downsides to what Bruno describes as being “cheated in the long run." He mentioned that although the students have remembered all the facts they don't really achieve any additional intelligence. He brought up a good point that a lot of people wouldn't have thought of in terms of a student’s education.
It would be unfair for teachers to use cell phones most of the time because not all students have that ability. There are ways to go around this issue. There are always going to be opposing sides to this argument. Personally I feel that there are solutions available for teachers who dislike cell phone use in class. For example for people who don't have cell phones can partner up with someone who does have one, or there can be school administered tablets each teacher has just in case.
