Caring for Populations: Assessment and Diagnosis
INTRODUCTION
Assessment and diagnosis are the keys to caring in healthcare practice. For a Community Healthcare Nurse (CHN) to effectively practice in any given community, she has to assess the community, find out what problems exist, and formulate a plan to assist the people of the community in meeting their healthcare needs. Throughout this paper I will be exploring my community, Odenton, Maryland, its demography, and epidemiology and assessing the living conditions and problems of the people in the community by gathering data from census reports, vital statistic and city records as well as windshield survey. I will compare the data with that of the county, Anne Arundel, and the state

In the morning and evening hours people were in a hurry trying to get to and from work, school buses picking up and dropping off children, others walking and jogging to get in their exercise, some with strollers and their babies, some walking as family, husband, and wife holding hands with one or two young children. People were well kept and looked healthy, although some were moderately overweight. I did not observe any homeless person, or people that seem to be under the influence drugs or alcohol or young people gathered together aimlessly even at the corners of the four liquor stores in the…show more content…
It is in part due to the lack of education about the risks of obesity and its associated diseases and absence of a healthcare center, that Odenton is threatened by this epidemic. Although the community has not been fully hit by this epidemic, it soon will experience an issue if nothing is done to prevent it, historical data and correlative evidence has shown that substance abuse and subsequently, the population and poverty level will be on the rise.
