Angela Harmon Unit 4 Case study 1 A & P 1 1/16/15 Overcoming the Perils of Canoe Lake I can’t believe this is happening to me!! My First time at summer camp and I cut my foot open on a broken bottle. If only I would had listened to my canoeing instructor and not messed around with my best friend like it did to make the canoe tip over. They are rushing me to the camp nurse who takes care of my cut. The nurse looks at me in concern and explains to me that not only did I cut my foot but I also exposed that cut to bacteria, parasites, and fungi from the cattle farm that is just upstream from the lake. As I sit there listening to the nurse explain all these things to me. I start to feel sore all over my shoulders, arms and back. I look down at my skin after my eyes have adjusted from the sun and see that my skin is a nice pink/reddish color. Great, I have a cut on my foot that has been exposed to who knows what and now I have a sunburn! What a way to end the day. The nurse and my camp leader start to explain to me that I need to keep myself hydrated by drinking lots of water and to use sunscreen. At least an SPF of 50 and something that is water and sweat proof. As she is bandaging my foot up she proceed to tell me that I won’t be able to go canoeing anymore until my foot heal and I need to keep off my foot as much as I can and keep my foot off the ground so I don’t catch it on something and open the cut even more . You need to clean it 2-3 times a day with warm soapy water and anti-bacterial soap and to use a triple antibiotic ointment to help it heal properly. Make sure you keep it clean and away from dirt. I can hear my canoe instructor outside the nurse’s office talking to another camp leader. They are talking about having a big meeting with all of the kids and staff about the safety and things that could happen while you’re here. Of course, I have to be
