Business Dining Etiquette Prepared for Dr. Diane Cheeks Business Communications Prepared by Lyndsee Savage November 17, 2011 “Did you know that more than 50% of all business is finalized at the dining table? In our rapidly growing economy, doing business over a meal is an essential part of doing business.” Therefore, business dining etiquette is a very important asset to have. However, more and more companies are becoming aware of the bad table manners many new employees endure. Various individuals may question why businesses no longer expect new employees to have dining etiquette. Well, they know that with the growing and changing of the economy most families do not have the time for proper dinners. As a result, many children are not getting the proper practice of what dining etiquette is or what it consists of. In other words, it is rare for children to get any dining etiquette experience since their dining consists of fast foods and frozen dinners. For this reason, many businesses now require employees to be trained in proper business dinning etiquette because, “it is in this setting that table manners play a major role as relationships are developed and strengthened. There is no better place, or possible worse place to make an impression.” Doing business over a dinner is an effective way of building a relationship. It helps make a sale or close a long awaited deal. Ultimately, business dinning is a meeting. While it is very important to know your product or service, it is also crucial to know your table manners. “Too many people jeopardize an opportunity because they fail to observe the rules of etiquette.” If one cannot be appropriate at the dinner table, then others may wonder what else may be lacking in one’s education.
