Briefly outline the key principles of coaching and evaluate its contribution to Leadership development “Coaching is unlocking people’s potentials to maximize their own potential”. Coaching is an art of facilitating the development, learning and performance of another i.e. partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their professional and personal potentials. Coaching assesses the current opportunities and challenges of individuals and organisations, thereby defining the scope of the relationship, identifying priorities for actions and establishment of specific desired outcomes. The evolvement of self-discovery with emphasis on the fact that we all have the capability, coaching serves as a catalyst that help unlock that potential. Secondly, is the need not to focus only on current performance but also on potential. According to John Whitmore we must think of people in terms of their potential and not just their potential. A coach must genuinely believe the coachee is capable providing solutions and maximize their potential which brings about sustainable performance. The third principle stresses on the importance of awareness and responsibility. Awareness helps the coachee understand his current situation and assesses those external and internal interference (such as fear of failure, lack of confidence, organisational change) that hinders him from maximizing his potential. Taking ownership and responsibility for one’s choice and actions helps the individual to identify priorities
