Discuss psychological theories of the breakdown of romantic relationships (24 marks) Breakdown is the failure of holding a romantic relationship together between the two partners. Duck put forward several reasons as to why relationships may breakdown. One of those reasons is ‘Lack of Skills’, for example the lack of interpersonal skills, such as communication; this may leave the relationship unsatisfying/unrewarding. A second reason to breakdown is ‘Lack of Stimulation’ this could be boredom or the feeling that the relationship isn’t progressing. The final reason is ‘Maintenance Difficulties’, this is when the relationship could be strained by practical difficulties, such as distance.
One theory for the breakdown of relationships was put forward by Duck who gave three broad categories as to why relationships break up; pre-existing doom where the failure was inevitable, mechanical failure which is where the couple find themselves drifting apart and sudden death where the discovery of betrayal or infidelity leads to immediate break. Duck also proposed other reasons for relationship dissolution such as lack of skills. A partner may lack the interpersonal skills to make the relationship mutually satisfying. They may be a poor conversationalist or poor at indicating their interest in their partner. Another cause of relationship breakdown is a lack of maintenance.

Research found that there was little decease in satisfaction is lovers reunited regularly. This model is gives some insight into possible effective techniques to enable one to be able to repair the relationship as issues within the relationship becomes apparent to at least one person during the intrapsychic and the dyadic phase allows the couple to work through their problems and possibly fix or improve these in order to allow the relationship to be saved through discussion with or without the aid of an experienced marriage counselor. This is supported by Duck’s study where he found that a lack of skills such as social skills can lead to dissatisfaction within the relationship as it leads to poor conversation, and this could be corrected during the dyadic phase of the model by improving communication Brehm and Kassin claimed that women are more likely to stress unhappiness and incompatibility as reasons
When the link between the Dark Triad and religiousness has been examined, researchers usually report negative correlation. Kämmerle, Unterrainer, Dahmen-Wassenberg, Fink and Kapfhammer (2014), in their research on religious/spiritual well-being and Dark Triad, stated: ''Religious/Spiritual well-being was confirmed to be negatively correlated with these negative aspects of personality, in particular with subclinical psychopathy. More specifically, there were several notable overlaps; narcissism, for instance, was found to be significantly positively associated with some RSWB subdimensions such as 'hope' or 'connectedness'.” Łowicki and Zajenkowski (2016) also reported a negative correlation between psychopathy, Machiavellianism and general religious beliefs. Intrinsic religiosity was connected with lower psychopathy and Machiavellianism and extrinsic religiousness was linked to narcissism. When empathy was added as a mediator , for both psychopathy and Machiavellianism, the effect on religious belief
However, spreading tension does not resolve tension. Triangles are stable, but unhappy—the three people locked in tension must deal with their mutually shared issues. Family systems theory does hold that there is a need for a differentiation of the self—in fact, a lack of differentiation is one of the reasons many family members experience psychological instability (Differentiation of the self, 2009, Bowen theory). normal temperature, blood pressure, skin color. Failure to function adequately is based on the lack of ability to cope with everyday life. People can often live with feeling depressed now and again and not allow it to affect their daily functioning e.g. ability to work, however the if depression affected the family life then it could be seen as an abnormality. However a weakness of deviation form social norms is susceptical to Abuse.
In The Unresponsive Bystander: Why Doesn’t He Help? Latané and Darley said “If he does not intervene, he may feel empathetic distress at a victim’s continuing unhappiness, shame from the actual or implied reproach from other people, and guilt for failing to live up to his own standards of behavior” (1970). If a bystander chooses not to help he may feel useless and feel really bad about himself like he can not help anybody. Or in some cases the bystander can feel shame by others around him and feel they didn’t pursue their role as a helping citizen. When a bystander does decide to get involved, they could be taking a big risk.
Du Bois’ students’ realization that little is expected of them and little is welcomed is a result of a lack of empowerment; it is a byproduct of the absence of culturally relevant teaching, which in the end is a damaging thing for children. The less that is expected of them, the less they will give, and yet they will still be ridiculed for what they do offer, and continue to give less, causing a constant trapping cycle. This brings out the importance of culturally relevant teaching and how the lack of empowerment which is gained through culturally relevant teaching will cause intellectual harm to diverse children and harm their outlook on life. One of the most detrimental effects on students of color who are educated through traditional means is that it doesn’t involve culturally relevant teaching that subconsciously forms an idea of accepted self-hatred, as Gregory Michie (2004) observes in See You When We Get There. Jokes about dark skin and changing their natural hair color and eye color were common among a group of
