Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., is credited with discovering Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, in 1989. She found that particular eye movements would reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts in some of her clients. Since Dr. Shapiro’s discovery, EMDR has been changed and further developed into a highly effective treatment for diseases such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Panic Disorders. In 2003, David Grand, Ph.D., discovered…show more content…
Maintaining the Brainspot with focus on the body’s “felt sense” of that specific issue stimulates a deep healing process in the brain. This process weakens the maladaptive emotional and physiological responses that take place at a reflexive or cellular level within the nervous system. “Brainspotting appears to stimulate, focus, and activate the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself from trauma.” When the Brainspotting has processed down to the reflexive core and it appears the client has reached a zero distress level, a new “floor” is broken through, digging deeper into the brain. The reflexive core of the brain is located in the deep, unconscious mind that controls circulation, digestion and respiration. Once the reflexive core has been found, Brainspotting is able to dismantle the dysfunctional beliefs and…show more content…
Brainspotting is all about locating, activating, and processing Brainspot. Another main difference between EMDR and Brainspotting are the tools used during the sessions. EMDR does not typically use tools, but Brainspotting is the most effective when it is done with BioLateral Sound CDs. BioLateral Sound CDs use healing sounds that enhance the brain’s ability to process information by alternately stimulating the two hemispheres. The healing sounds enter the brain through the auditory nerves in the ears while the eardrums are vibrated bilaterally. Clients who are highly dissociated do not need to use BioLateral Sound CDs until they are more integrated and
