March 3, 2011 Book Report For our assignment I found a book that explains the tale of one of the most famous golfers of all time, Sam Snead. The title of the book was called “The Education of a Golfer” written by Sam Snead with help by Al Stump. This book is reaching the age of about 50, having been written in 1962. “The Education of a Golfer” takes you through Sam Snead’s entire career from beginning to end. It tells about his up bringing in a small mountain town in Virginia and what lead him to become the person and golfer he is today. Early in the book it tells of how he came to find the game of golf, which was through is older brother that smoked the ball a country mile. Sam describes his first thoughts on swinging the club, with only being taught by what he saw when watched his brother swing in their fields. He takes us through his early jobs a young man working as a bag boy, then later the Pro’s Assistant. Sam talks about getting some recognition from wealthier members that thought he was good enough to some day hit the pro circuit. Soon he talks about the lessons he learned when he finally reaches the Pro Circuit, all of his ups and downs of his career and the education he received during his interesting journey from poor hillbilly to an established great of the game of golf. In terms of how I liked the book, I thought it was a relatively quick read, included great situational advice and was a fantastic look into the mind of greatest men to ever play the game. The way he segmented talking about his thoughts on the game, such as driving, pitching, putting and how he did it while incorporating his real experience in some of the biggest tournaments of the game. Sam’s story is an inspirational one that deserves applause, coming from a poor family in the hills of Virginia to never losing to Ben Hogan in a playoff. There were a few things I wasn’t
