The background of the room contains a bookshelf, a chair covered with a throw rug and a woven rug lining the floor. The combination of these elements create a feeling of warmth and comfort within the space of the interior. The artists application of a warm colour scheme, filled with tones of yellow’s, brown’s and rich reds, adds to this feeling of comfort. Using a block painting technique, the artist develops warmth which adds texture and enhances the relaxed atmosphere of the interior. Although St. John the Divine has the three traditional gothic doors and porches on the west end, it also includes a narthex just inside. I believe that the narthex was added to Saint John the Divine to act as a lobby or an entrance area to reflect before you enter the nave. Polished rose travertine stone line the rotunda, lobby and halls on the first floor. As you enter the rotunda you will notice the state seal embedded on the floor. The texture of the painting conveys great depth. The foreground stands out but the background is also accessible for enjoyment. This allows the viewer of the painting to picture themselves at different depths of the experience. I believe the mood of the painting is relaxed.
