I believe that being true to yourself is something that is different for every person. Some people find it easy and have high confidence and self- esteem, whilst others worry about being judged. First of all, a definition of being true to yourself might be helpful. Being true to yourself is about accepting yourself and not worrying about what others think of you. It is ok to be different and we should embrace our individuality rather than trying to hide from it. This is one of those times when something is easier said than done. You can tell someone to stop worrying about what others think and to be themselves, however, there will come a time when you will struggle to take your own advice. Many teenagers in a typical high school situation are afraid to bush the boundaries and be a little different because of what others will think of them, yet when they are with their friends at lunchtimes, this fear disappears. Everyone wants to be liked, however, we need to accept the fact that no matter how hard we try, there will always be someone who criticises you. We just have to learn to tolerate these people’s opinions and don’t be around people who want you to change. There are some people who naturally have high self confidence and will always be able to be themselves no matter what other’s tell them. These are usually the loud kids who seem to be friends with everyone. For others it’s not that easy, however, it’s not impossible. The key is to stay with the people who have similar interests to us and who we know will always allow us to be ourselves without judgment and criticism. We should always stand up for what is right to us and never listen to the people who try to discourage us from doing the things we are passionate about, no matter who they are. An example of this is seen in the short story Five Ways To Disappoint Your Vietnamese Mother, by Diana Nguyen. The girl in this story is constantly letting her mother down because she pursues her own dreams rather than her mothers. Eventually the mother get’s fed up with her daughter and kicks her out. Throughout the whole story, the girl stays true to herself and, although it costs her her mother, she follows her heart and takes the path that she wants to
