What Is a Leader The Army defines a leader as an individual who provides purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. Our textbook defines a leader as someone who obtains followers and influences them in setting and achieving an objective. In basic terms, a leader can be anyone who takes charge of a group of people and sets goals or objectives to be accomplished, and does so by any means possible. It is important to understand that to be a leader you have to be able to understand the group of people you are working with. What I mean by that, is understanding their strengths and weakness, and choosing the right person for the task. How Are Leaders Made Leaders are made. That means they learn, grow, and develop into great leaders through the education they receive, the books they read, the people they associate with, and from their experiences. Leaders learn to harness the good traits they see from their senior leaders and develop their own style. They take the experiences they have from their failures and successes and ensure that they put them to use when developing plans to ensure success. Many people like to say that leaders can be born, but can you really trust someone who has no experiences? In the Army they always pair an officer with a noncommissioned officer (NCO). The reason for this an officer coming out of school has little to no experience in combat because he has never been there, but an NCO has seen combat, has risen through the ranks, and has the experience to advise the officer on how to accomplish the mission. With time though, the junior officer gains the experience they need to make better judgement calls.
