Basic Behavior Modification Program to Change an Unwanted Behavior Alina Astacio PS 360-02 10/7/2012 Kaplan University Basic Behavior Modification Program to Change an Unwanted Behavior Introduction; Functional behavior analysis (FBA) interventions utilize three strategic approaches which include altering antecedent variables, altering consequent variables and teaching alternative behaviors; we can determine which conditions need to be changed by identifying the conditions that are responsible for the behavior and use this information for effective intervention strategies (Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007,p.502). 1) My stepson Stephen arrives home from school each day throws his book bag into a corner, turns on the television, raids the fridge for snacks and remains glued to the T.V. until dinner time, at about 7:30 pm. By the time dinner is done, it is already about eight thirty and time to wind down for the night ,but Stephen still has to do his homework, bathe, and prepare clothing for the next day. Whenever Stephen is prompted to do his homework or prepare for the next day he refuses and becomes emotional/attitude, which is many times followed by escape from doing homework / responsibilities and continued preferred activities (TV/games). My goal is to get Stephen to avoid procrastination and escape, by completing his homework as well as other responsibilities before dinner is served at 7:30 pm; this would allow him to enjoy stress free, leisure time as well while properly prepared for the following day, by having homework done as well as responsibilities such as bathing and preparing clothing for the next day. 2) Using (FBA) can identify interventions that will be effective in treating the problem behavior; “…antecedents that may trigger the problem behavior”
